Why are you running for Student Government?
The main reason I want to run for Student Government is because I believe representation is important. Our university is tremendously diverse, but I feel like we’ve fallen a little behind in Student Government to that respect. I want to be able to build strong relationships with the students in the College of Arts and Science, so more people are aware of the changes happening within the university.
Which issue do think should be changed or improved on campus?
The main objective I have for improving our campus is to better serve first-generation college students who do not have the necessary resources to succeed in a four-year institution. The only way I was able to afford college was because of a scholarship I obtained after high school. However, not everyone is fortunate enough to have that sort of support on campus.
I want to be able to help more students get into college without letting barriers such as money be the factor that determines if they should further their education or not. I would suggest having more events targeted at high school students so they can begin to have relationships within the university. I also would love to see students have more support on campus throughout their college experience by having workshops or specific events that empower them to shoot for their goals.
What makes you qualified to sit on Student Government?
I have been an active member of the community and the university for a number of years. Just recently I helped bring the Association of Latino Professionals for America organization on campus. I am also a part of the Collaborative in the Office of Civic and Social Responsibility, which helps bring a large number of community members every year to the university because of our Service Days.
I am constantly looking for opportunities to get involved and understand the needs of everyone around me. I believe I can contribute a unique perspective to Student Government because of all the community projects I’ve been involved with. I have experience holding leadership positions within the university, and I hope I can keep learning in the process.
