Jordan Gebeke
- College of Arts and Sciences Senator
Additional Information
Why are you running for Student Government?
I am currently representing the College of Arts and Sciences as a senator in Student Government (SG-UNO). I have a few projects that I am working on that are likely to spill over the current 2019-2020 term into the 2020-2021 term.
One of these projects is creating a documented history for SG-UNO. By establishing a documented history, SG-UNO would be able to further fulfill its mission to uphold transparency across this organization. Additionally, a documented history will provide SG-UNO the opportunity to present itself as a long-lasting student self-governance organization, providing SG-UNO with some much-needed legitimacy.
Which issue do you think should be changed or improved on campus?
The Archives and Special Collections Department in Criss Library is running out of physical space to hold physical, tangible documents. Archives are an extremely important hub of historical documentation for all sectors of society.
Although the world constantly moves towards digitization as opposed to paper copies, paper copies are vitally important to maintaining and preserving history. Digital files are much easier to access and use for a researcher, but physical, tangible documents provide a substantial sum of legitimacy to historical events. They are visible proof of the existence of a person or happening of an event.
I believe it is in the University of Nebraska at Omaha's best interest to continue to patronize and support the Archives and Special Collections Department in Criss Library as an integral part of campus. Therefore, the Archives and Special Collections Department in Criss Library should be given the funding and attention it needs to improve physical storage space.
What makes you qualified to sit on Student Government?
Although I am currently serving as a Student Senator, that alone does not qualify me or anyone in any way to sit on Student Government. I am qualified to sit on Student Government because I take an active role to ensure transparency within the organization.
I constantly motion and second motions to vote on resolutions via roll call so that UNO students can see how their representatives voted on a specific resolution. I am seeking to improve portions of SG-UNO's Bylaws so SG-UNO can further legitimize itself as a truly democratic institution. Specifically, I am seeking to change the voting method SG-UNO uses for its elections from first-past-the-post (FPTP), or winner-takes-all, to single transferable vote (STV) under the Hagenbach-Bischoff quota.
Right now, I am working to see if Engage can support such a method of voting and how to explain and train to SG-UNO members and members of the electorate how the system works.
