Why are you running for Student Government?
During my senior year of high school, I was involved in mock government elections for AP US Government and Politics. In this mock government, I was elected as a senator, this experience allowed me to get a taste of senate and house rules such as elections, passing bills, and the overall process of sitting in the Senate on a mock government level.
This inspired me to get more involved in governmental/political affairs because I realized how much a person can impact their community. That year, I started canvassing for Kara Eastman for District 2 in Nebraska. During this time, I learned so much about campaigning and how much a positive impact one person can make if they listen to the needs of others.
Because of this experience, I also wanted to make some sort of change that would better impact my community. In this circumstance, my community is UNO and I want to be that person that can help make the changes that not only I want to see, but want the student body wants to see to better improve the quality of student life and education on campus.
Which issue do think should be changed or improved on campus?
Two major issues that I've noticed during my time at UNO are the meal options on Dodge Campus and the lack of students that are actively participating in student organizations. Firstly, because meal plans don't work on Dodge Campus, many people that do have meal plans and can't go down to Scott to grab a quick bite to eat are often stuck between the thought of just paying for food on Dodge, yet also realizing the fact that they do in fact have a meal plan that could use that on Scott Campus if they had time.
It is very inconvenient that UNO doesn't provide food services with meal plans on both of our campuses. Another issue I've noticed is that students, especially first-year students, have a difficult time getting involved on campus. Even with events such as the involvement fair, I will still hear some of my friends say, that was during my class time, now I don't know what clubs I can join.
I think that we need to somehow make it easier for students to be able to join clubs in some way so we can promote that aspect of student life more on campus.
What makes you qualified to sit on Student Government?
I believe that my experience working and canvassing for Kara Eastman, being elected senator in my high school mock election, and being a member of the Freshman Leadership Council here on campus are all reasons that make me qualified to sit on Student Government.
As I mentioned above, my role as a senator on the mock election exposed me to how elections work and how a bill gets passed through congress. Canvassing for Kara Eastman allowed me to gain knowledge on how to run an election and showed me how running for any kind of office needs to be a selfless job because you are representing the people's opinions, not just your own opinions.
And last but not least, being a part of FLC here at UNO has taught me how to become a better leader and how to talk, build, and maintain connections with people which I believe is a skill I will use every day in Student Government.
