Why are you running for Student Government?
I care a lot about everyone being offered access to a high quality education. There are many flaws within modern day system of education that I would like to see changed. I am running for student government because I care about trying to solve these issues.
I want to have the opportunity to build relationships with others and work as a coalition to improve education both at UNO and beyond through the connections and changes that we make.
Which issue do you think should be changed or improved on campus?
The department of education does not set up students to be as successful of teachers as they could be. Classes talk about the importance of encouraging diversity of students but it in many cases it is surface level. There is little to no conversation about how actual systems of education could be modified to be more inclusive.
As educators we are preparing to enter a field that, although it is unquestionably valuable, it is also fundamentally flawed. It is a system constructed to serve a very specific ideal of what a student should be. We are told are job is to help our students to be successful but successful is only defined in one way rather than being individualized. Teacher candidates are taught how to know information but not how to care about their students as unique, valuable individuals.
Many teacher candidates spend time in the program feeling like they have learned some useful skills but ultimately do not know how to teach. We should be working to construct a system built on caring not on knowing.
What makes you qualified to sit on Student Government?
I care a lot about issues of human rights and how people are treated. I believe that education is a basic human right. That education should be the best it can be both at a collegiate level and at a k-12 as we are learning to teach in the school of education.
I am a Regent scholar and I have maintained a 4.0 GPA in all of my semesters here at UNO. I enjoy working with others to solve problems and build connections. I feel comfortable speaking in front of large groups of people and I will not shy away from taking about issues that I think are important. I want to do everything I can to serve others.
