Why are you running for Student Government?
I am wanting to run for student government because I believe my ideas and experience can benefit the UNO students. We as students are key for changing UNO and instituting policies for our benefit. It is important to provide a voice to faculty and staff on behalf of students and I am confident I can represent our interests well.
Which issue do you think should be changed or improved on campus?
I think one notable thing to change at UNO is parking. So many of the students on our campus commute here to go to school, and the parking situation as it is will hinder the growth of UNO. Unfortunately, this is a hard to tackle subject. We don’t have a lot of space to add lanes to reduce traffic or even to add more garages. Therefore, my solution to help not only grow UNO but to aid on-campus traffic is to vastly increase the amount of online classes. In light of current events, we may be forced to move entirely online and if we had more classes already online, it could aid our transition should this unfortunate event happen in the future. Not only will more online classes help reduce traffic, they could provide invaluable opportunities for our students and even ease the load on professors. Students in a college could become graders for gen-eds of that college (dependent on completion of a higher-level class, by faculty discretion) which would give them something to put on their resume as they’re applying for internships. And lastly, if we have student graders and offer more classes online, this will mean we could offer more affordable classes as means to attract more students, as well as have more students per online section. Students in Lincoln or even in Iowa could take their entire semester online and have more points-of-contact with their graders should they be confused on topics. In return, UNO would make money as more students could attend with distance education.
What makes you qualified to sit on Student Government?
I believe I am qualified to be in student government because I am a transfer student and have seen the way another school handles similar problems that UNO faces. Along with this, I am a couple years older than a typical college junior so I believe that I can provide a different perspective to Student Government. I believe in getting involved in what you care about, and I intend to do that here at UNO.
