Why are you running for Student Government?
I believe students should have every opportunity to succeed here at UNO. With that comes access to mental-health care, feeling like your beliefs and lifestyle are recognized, and feeling safe and secure.
I want to advocate for us students and provide a liaison between the student body and the administration to be able to facilitate real change on campus. It is important to me that all students here have the equal opportunity to enjoy their years at UNO, whether that be through better mental health education and awareness, alternative dietary options at events hosted by clubs, or figuring out a compromise with parking services to be more understanding in terms of ticketing.
Which issue do you think should be changed or improved on campus?
The one issue that I think everyone wants to improve on campus is parking. This issue is one that I want to be a part of the solution because I know first hand how upsetting and stressful it is, and as college students with real issues and stresses, parking shouldn't be something we have to worry about. Not only is ticketing and paying fines that are expensive a major issue, but for students who have night classes or meetings, walking across campus alone at night can be scary, and I know that for me personally, having a parking spot close to the building that I'm leaving would make me feel a lot safer and more secure.
As someone with dietary restrictions, I understand how frustrating it is when clubs and organizations on campus host events and don't offer any alternatives to meat, dairy, gluten, sugar, or any other dietary need. I would work hard to advocate for us students who deal with this issue and find a way that our campus can be more accommodating.
The third issue I feel could be highly improved on campus is our mental health education and resources. While we do have CAPS available to us, we only have a limited number of times that we are able to go free of charge. I believe that mental health is something that every single person should be aware of and should actively work on. We all have days that we feel down, and having resources on campus to help us through stressful or difficult situation is a necessity.
What makes you qualified to sit on Student Government?
This year, I was a member of the Freshman Leadership Council, which is the freshman segment of Student Government. Through being in FLC, I have connected with many senators as well as sat in on numerous committee and senate meetings.
I have learned about how Student Government works, the process of presenting a proposal and how to write a resolution which are all essential to making real change within Student Government. In FLC, we also worked to strengthen our problems solving and leadership skills through mentoring middle school kids and helping them create and design an initiative to better their school.
I believe that through this experience, I have gained ample knowledge to be able to effectively communicate and collaborate with other Senators.
