Ana Diaz-Orozco knows what it means to find a way forward—especially when there isn’t a clear path ahead.

Today, she serves full-time as the Community Engagement Coordinator for the Office of Latino/Latin American Studies (OLLAS) at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO), mentoring students and helping them unlock their potential. But Ana’s story started like so many others—with questions, uncertainty, and the brave decision to be the first in her family to go to college.

Growing up close to her family, Ana knew she didn’t want to stray too far from home. UNO offered her the perfect balance: close enough to stay connected, yet far enough to grow independently. With the support of the Susan T. Buffett Scholarship, she moved into the dorms and began her journey as a first-generation college student—navigating a world her parents had never experienced.

“I was the first one in my family to go to college,” Ana recalls. “That was scary. But the scholarship made everything click. I could live on campus, build relationships, and get involved in student life.”

At UNO, Ana double-majored in Psychology and Latino/Latin American Studies, combining her passion for mental health with a deep desire to explore and affirm her cultural identity. Her academic choices weren’t just strategic—they were personal.

“I wanted to learn more about my culture while also applying it to psychology,” she explains. “I wanted to help people better understand what they’re going through.”

By the time she neared graduation, Ana wasn’t ready to leave the classroom behind. “I love learning,” she says. “I just wanted to keep going.”

Still, graduate school came with new challenges. Fewer scholarships. Higher costs. And more questions.

But Ana found another door.

After landing a full-time position at UNO in the OLLAS office—a space she had once been introduced to as an undergrad—Ana learned about the university’s employee benefit: tuition remission. With her education now financially within reach, she enrolled in an online master’s program through the University of Nebraska at Kearney, choosing a schedule that allowed her to balance both work and school.

Her path wasn’t always smooth. Ana candidly shares how the graduate school experience felt lonelier, more independent, and less supported than what she had experienced as an undergrad.

“As a first-gen student, I didn’t know how to ask for help in grad school,” she says. “And when I did, sometimes I didn’t get the response I needed. It was discouraging.”

Still, Ana persisted. She leaned on her supervisor, her cousin who had attended graduate school, and the support network she had built at UNO. She discovered the power of asking for help—and of being over-prepared. “I asked three people for recommendation letters, even though I only needed two. One fell through, and I was so grateful I had the backup.”

While completing her degree, Ana interned with UNO’s Summer Scholars Program, mentoring high school seniors exploring college life. It was a full-circle moment. “I loved that they got to live in the dorms, ride the shuttle, and get a real taste of what college could be like,” she says. “They were getting a glimpse of what I had once been so unsure of.”

Now a graduate of her program, Ana sees the direct impact her degree has on her work. At OLLAS, she advises scholarship recipients—many of whom are first-gen students like she once was—offering the kind of guidance she had to seek out herself. She’s also the advisor for Sigma Lambda Gamma, a multicultural sorority on campus, where she’s passionate about empowering women with the tools and resources she once had to dig for.

“I love being able to provide what I didn’t have,” Ana says. “If I can make their journey even a little easier, it’s all worth it.”

Ana dreams of someday running her own educational nonprofit, focused on helping first-generation students and their families understand and navigate college and graduate school. With her passion for learning, her love for Omaha, and her deep-rooted commitment to uplifting her community, that dream feels entirely within reach.

“If I could tell my younger self anything,” Ana says, “it would be: Be kind to yourself. You’re doing something hard, and you’re doing it well.”

For Ana, graduate school was more than just another degree. It was a declaration—a way to honor her parents’ sacrifices, raise the number of Latinas with advanced degrees, and show others that there is a way. Education grows opportunity. And when that opportunity is met with heart, grit, and support—it grows even more.

Thinking about graduate school? You’re not alone—and you don’t have to go it alone. Like Ana, you can find support, funding, and a path that works for you. Reach out. Ask questions. And take that first step. There is a way.

UNO offers campus visits for its prospective graduate students one Friday each month. Navigating the selection of a graduate program is different than choosing a bachelors program. With this in mind, we have created a campus visit experience catered to the graduate student.

It doesn’t matter where you are in your graduate school journey. Visiting campus offers a variety of benefits.

Find Out Where Your Time on Campus Will Be Spent

As a graduate student, you are going to be spending a lot more time with your specific academic unit than you will in other campus buildings. We have hosted students who have already been admitted and simply want to see where their classes will be. Other students have not applied and are considering multiple programs.

Along with touring some of the shared spaces on campus that are frequented by graduate students, such as the library, writing center, and student center, we encourage you to walk through the building that will host the majority of your classes. While there, you will have the opportunity to visit your program department’s office and meet with a professor or advisor to learn some additional information. Our office can set up an appointment on your behalf.

Ask Questions and Get Answers Directly from The Source

Perhaps the most beneficial reason to visit campus is you will have the opportunity to meet professors or students from your program. This provides the opportunity to ask questions and get answers directly from the source. You can find plenty of helpful information on our website but asking those questions in person adds another level of assurance that you are making the right decision.

If you sign up for a visit, we will do our best to make sure you have the opportunity to sit down with a professor or student who is currently enrolled in your program. Developing relationships with professors is sometimes the deciding factor in choosing a program.

See Omaha In a New Light

If you aren’t from Omaha, this is a good chance to visit the surrounding area. Although you will spend a lot of time on campus, getting a feel for the Omaha area and all its opportunities is important in your graduate program selection as well.. We have had campus visitors travel in from long distances to not only visit campus, but also the city of Omaha. UNO has a saying, “Our campus is Omaha.” We hope that during your time at UNO you will immerse yourself in the many cultural experiences that Omaha offers.

UNO’s campus is nestled in the heart of Omaha in between two beautiful parks and Aksarben Village. Try to set aside some extra time to check out the surrounding area and visit some of Omaha’s many diverse neighborhoods.

Entering graduate school is an exciting yet challenging phase of academic life. As a first-year graduate student, it is crucial to lay a solid foundation for success. Here are some key insights that every first-year graduate student should know as they navigate the realm of graduate school.

Mastering Time Management

Effective time management becomes an indispensable skill in a student's graduate school experience. With an increased workload and demanding academic expectations, efficient time allocation becomes paramount. By creating a well-structured schedule and setting clear priorities, a graduate student can strike a balance between coursework, research, and personal commitments, ensuring productivity while avoiding burnout.

Cultivating Collaboration and Networking

Collaboration and networking are equally vital aspects of graduate school. Engaging with peers and faculty members provides avenues for intellectual discussions, support, and potential collaborations. Building a strong professional network not only enriches one's academic journey but also opens doors to future career opportunities.

Enhancing Communication Skills

Developing effective communication skills is crucial for a successful graduate student. Whether it is presenting research findings, taking part in seminars, or engaging in scholarly debates, articulating ideas clearly and concisely becomes indispensable. Effective communication fosters beneficial academic relationships and enhances the impact of one's work.

Embracing a New Way of Thinking
Graduate school requires a different level of thinking than what most undergraduate classes needed. Students will be pushed to consider and work through problems and puzzles in new ways and will be pushed to produce their own research questions to investigate. Classes tend to be heavier on reading, writing, and open discussion but lighter on the traditional lecture style that so many students experienced in undergraduate classes. This change can feel unnerving because it is more challenging to make the adjustment to consistently think this way. Students should be prepared to be open minded to this new learning style and may go through a learning curve during their first year of graduate school.

Master the Art of Research and Creative Activity:

Research is the backbone of graduate studies. Hone research skills by attending seminars, workshops, and collaborating with experienced researchers. Participating and presenting at conferences to highlight research and network with fellow program peers is also a key step to take during a student's time in graduate school.

Prioritizing Self-Care
Graduate school is also an ideal time to develop self-care practices. Engaging in activities that promote physical and mental well-being can combat the stress and pressure that often go with higher education. Regular exercise, quality sleep, and pursuing hobbies not only recharge the mind but also improve overall academic performance.

Seeking Guidance and Mentorship
Seeking guidance and mentorship is another invaluable asset for a first-year graduate student. Establishing strong relationships with faculty advisors or mentors can offer expert insights, guidance, and support throughout the academic journey. Mentors can supply constructive feedback, help navigate challenges, and aid in identifying research or career opportunities.

Accepting Setbacks as a Catalyst for Growth
Finally, accepting setbacks as an opportunity for growth is essential in graduate school. Research endeavors may encounter roadblocks, coursework may prove challenging, and imposter syndrome can creep in. Imposter syndrome can be isolating, but it is actually quite common in graduate students. Remember that fellow cohort members are probably feeling the same way, and older graduate students in the program are familiar with these challenges as well. Understanding that setbacks are a natural part of the learning process and enables one to persevere, learn from mistakes, and develop resilience.

The University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) offers graduate students many student resources and support throughout their journey. Access to our Campus Resource Guide gives students the opportunity to easily find different services and student success offices and departments. A first-year graduate student prioritizing these key insights will be well-equipped to navigate the challenges and reap the rewards that graduate school has to offer.

Many universities offer graduate programs in education. Individuals wanting to elevate their career, earn an advanced degree beyond a master’s and open doors to more job opportunities within the field of education should consider pursuing an Ed.D. or Ph.D.

One of the first decisions a student will need to make is the choice between applying for a Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) or a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in education. So which one should a student choose?

A Ph.D. and Ed.D. in education are both doctoral degrees. The one a student chooses will significantly affect their graduate school experience and career.

The decision between these two culminating degrees can be career-defining as each serves a vastly different purpose despite being equivalent in level. To ensure a student chooses the path that best aligns with their future career goals, it is important to take the time to first understand the differences in program curriculum, learn about the benefits of each program, and discover future career opportunities that relate to each degree.

What is an Ed.D. in Higher Education?
Before deciding between an Ed.D. vs. Ph.D., it is important to understand the meaning of a Doctor of Education (Ed.D.). The degree is well suited for seasoned educational leaders and executives in a variety of fields designed to prepare individuals to establish positive change in governments, corporations, nonprofits, and school systems. Common Ed.D. specializations include organizational change, leadership, administration, and workplace learning.

A Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) is degree oriented towards professionals who want to learn to use educational leadership skills. Combining both research and application, the Ed.D. applies to a broad range of industries inside and outside of the world of education. In other words, this degree aims at creating highly experienced educators who want to bring productive changes to an organization.

Benefits of an Ed.D. in Higher Education
There are many benefits of a doctoral degree in education. An advanced education degree can help individuals stay competitive in their field while preparing them for a variety of administrative roles. Another benefit of earning an Ed.D. is students get the opportunity to explore a targeted area of interest and learn strategies for addressing social challenges through their dissertation. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, graduates with a doctoral degree may earn an average salary that approaches six figures.

What is a Ph.D. in Higher Education?
A Doctor in Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree is similarly the highest degree an individual can earn in the field. A Ph.D. in education qualifies students primarily for research and teaching positions. Students learn to find gaps in existing research, contextually interpret relevant literature for posing new hypotheses, and produce new original research.

Benefits of a Ph.D. in Higher Education
There are many benefits to pursuing a Ph.D. in education. Students will learn to enhance their research skills and hone their technical abilities. A Ph.D. also gives students the opportunity to conduct research in an area that interests them, making their own discoveries and contributions to knowledge in the process.

Similarities Between an Ed.D. and a Ph.D.

Looking at the degrees side-by-side, there are some clear similarities. An Ed.D. and a Ph.D. are the highest level of education an individual can achieve in their field of study. Both degrees take several years to complete, typically 3–4 years for an Ed.D. and 5–7 for a Ph.D., depending on the area of interest and research. Both an Ed.D. and a Ph.D. require a significant amount of research and writing. To earn either degree, students must complete a dissertation after completing initial coursework, which requires extensive research and a detailed manuscript presenting a student's research objectives, methods, and results.

Differences Between an Ed.D. and a Ph.D.?

While there are many similarities between an Ed.D. and a Ph.D., there are also some key differences. One of the main differences is that an Ed.D. is geared more toward practical application or research, while a Ph.D. is typically more focused on theoretical research. Another difference is that an Ed.D. can typically be earned in a shorter amount of time than a Ph.D. If students are interested in pursuing a career in education administration or leadership, then an Ed.D. might be the right choice.

On the other hand, if a student is more interested in conducting research and teaching at the college level, then a Ph.D. in education might be a better fit. Ultimately, deciding which degree to pursue depends on a student's specific goals and interests. Both an Ed.D. and a Ph.D. in education can lead to rewarding careers in education, administration, government, and even leadership. Students are encouraged to speak with faculty and investigate which degree program makes the most sense for meeting their professional goals.
