Why study Latino/Latin American Studies?

"Education doesn't change the world, it changes the people who will change the world." -Paulo Freire

  • Want to study Latino/Latin American Studies?

Are you ready to expand your knowledge beyond the classroom and across borders? The Office of Latino/Latin American Studies (OLLAS) is ready to help you take that step. Whether you are a UNO student, community member, organization leader, or policy maker, OLLAS offers educational programming and resources to advance your understanding of Chicano/Latino/Latin American peoples and the critical issues affecting these populations.

OLLAS was created to ensure that our students and the community have the education and the skills needed to understand the connection of Latinos, Latin America and some of the most important issues of our times. Understanding the multiple root causes and socio-economic, political and cultural impacts of these populations has become a critical component of a true liberal arts education and is central to the development of an informed and engaged citizenry.

Graduate schools and employers today demand a more sophisticated understanding of trans-border issues and populations. Our society and our communities need professionals who can articulate policies and programs that are informed by research and lead to sustainable development and social change. If you want to improve your understanding of these issues and acquire the skills to address them through specialized courses, study abroad and culturally appropriate community engagement, then a Latino/Latin American Studies (LLS) major or a Chicano/Latino Studies (CLS) minor can be the perfect fit for you.

It’s easy to supplement your existing program of study with a double- or triple- major in Latino/Latin American Studies or a minor in Chicano/Latino Studies to improve your future career prospects. With more than 60 classes from 18 different disciplines to choose from, you have the flexibility to design your own specialty. OLLAS is especially attentive to the mentoring and advising needs of first-generation and ethnically diverse college students.
