Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

The FAFSA is used by universities to award both federal and nonfederal aid to students. This aid includes loans, grants, scholarships, and federal work-study.

By filing the FAFSA, you can offset some of the costs associated with earning your college degree.

Who Qualifies for Federal Student Aid?

FAFSA federal aid is awarded to students who demonstrate financial need.

To qualify for federal FAFSA money, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or eligible noncitizen
  • Have a valid Social Security number
  • Demonstrate financial need (requirements may vary)
  • Maintain satisfactory academic progress
  • Be currently enrolled in or plan to enroll in an eligible degree or certificate program
  • Have a high school diploma or recognized equivalent (such as a GED diploma or homeschooling certificate)

The FAFSA will open by December 2023.

You can apply for financial aid before you apply for admission to UNO; however, you must be admitted to a degree-seeking program of study in order to be offered financial aid.

Submit your FAFSA before UNO's priority filing date of May 1 each year to maximize the amount of aid you may receive. Eligible students who apply by this date have a greater chance of receiving need-based aid.
