Announcement on Recent "Campus Security Concern" Phishing Email

Timely Warning Bulletin

Issued at 3 P.M. on Feb. 24, 2017

The UNO Department of Public Safety (DPS) and UNO Information Security have determined circumstances exist that may pose a threat to members and guests of the UNO campus community. Please read this notification and take any necessary precautions to avoid being a potential victim. Feel free to call UNO DPS with any questions or concerns.

Offense(s): Deception/Fraud - Phishing
Location(s): Campuswide
Date/Time of Occurrence(s): 2-24-17
Description of Suspect(s): Unknown at this time

Incident Summary:

On 2-24-17, at 11:06 A.M., it was reported that an email was received that stated “: RE CAMPUS SECURITY CONCERN!!” In the subject line, it requests the recipient click a link to view the incident. This did not come from UNO, nor are the senders associated with UNO.

Safety Tips:

  • If emails are received of this nature, do not respond to them.
  • If you received checks from an email like this, do not cash or deposit them.
  • Report any type of suspicious emails to the UNO Information Security Office (security@unomaha.edu).
  • Report any suspected fraud to UNO Deptartment of Public Safety.
  • Always log in from a trusted URL, rather than clicking a link in an email.
  • Do not access links from within emails you may not trust or know.
  • Use different passwords at work than those you use for personal accounts.
  • Check links by “hovering” over them before clicking to see their true destination.
  • Verify the sender by hovering over the sender’s name to reveal the actual sender.
  • If you receive a phone call, ask them for a verification of the service or ask someone else if you feel it sounds too good to be true.
