The University of Nebraska Information Technology Services team has learned of two phishing emails sent today targeting the UNO community. Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to read this timely warning and take necessary precautions to avoid becoming a victim.
The subject line of one of these email reads “Important Document.” The malicious link is not provided in the email itself, but instead, in the attachment named INVOICE.HTM. Do not open this attachment.
If you received this email, opened the attachment, then clicked on the link and tried to login to view the document, change your password as soon as possible and reach out to ITS via security@unomaha.edu.
The subject line of the second phishing email is "University of Nebraska Omaha Employment Outreach." If you received this particular email, delete it. Do not respond to this email. This email was not sent on behalf of anyone at UNO.
This scam email has been reported to be received widespread across the university. If you receive offers such as this, always be skeptical. Watch for grammatical errors. Ask yourself if this type of email is something you would normally receive by the person who sent it. If you think the email might be real, and you are interested, find a way to reach out to the sender in some other way besides email to verify the offer.
Safety Tips:
- If emails are received of this nature, do not respond to them.
- In the future, if you receive an email asking you to review a document or click on a link, check with the sender of the email first, preferably via the phone, to make sure it is a valid email/request.
- Report any suspicious emails to the UNO Information Security Office at security@unomaha.edu.
- Verify who sent an email by hovering your mouse over the sender's name.
