The University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) College of Business Administration (CBA) is reshaping how business students present their credentials to employers, replacing concentrations with clearly defined majors to better align degrees with careers.
➡️ What’s new: The University of Nebraska System on Feb. 5 approved the transition of the following seven existing Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (BSBA) concentrations into full academic majors beginning in the Fall of 2026:
- Accounting
- Entrepreneurship
- Finance
- Human Resources Management
- Logistics
- Management and Leadership
- Marketing
🔎 Zoom in: Historically, UNO offered one BSBA degree with a single “Business Administration” major and 15 concentrations. This change was achieved without adding new costs or delaying graduation.
💡 Why it matters: The change strengthens the degree-to-career pipeline for students:
- Employers more easily identify relevant skills and training
- Students gain stronger recognition of their academic preparation
- Graduates are better positioned for entry-level roles and long-term advancement
📊 By the numbers: Career fields associated with each of the degree programs are considered high-demand, high-skill, or high-wage or “H3” in the Omaha area by the Nebraska Department of Labor. Notably:
- Management (No. 2) and accounting (No. 5) are among the highest in the H3 ranking. Finance (No. 30), marketing (No. 36), logistics (No. 54), and human resources (57) also made the H3 list.
- Marketing managers and human resource managers have the highest pay, with median annual salaries of $115,000 and $135,000, respectively.
- Logicians are expected to see 22% job growth by 2032.
🎤 What they’re saying:
- Chancellor Joanne Li, Ph.D., CFA: “Workforce development is at the forefront of everything we do at UNO. These seven business majors align with some of the highest-wage, highest-demand, and highest-skill careers in the Omaha metropolitan area. By making this change, we are streamlining how we prepare students not just to enter these roles, but to thrive in them throughout their careers.”
- Phil He, Ph.D., Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs: “This change reflects a broader, university-wide effort to more clearly communicate the skills and experiences our students bring to the workforce. It is especially impactful because it improves how our graduates are positioned with employers without adding cost, coursework, or time to degree. This is a major win for students, families, and the employers.”
- Gurpreet Dhillon, Ph.D., Dean, College of Business Administration: “Our students already graduate with the skills employers are seeking. By moving to clearly defined majors, we ensure those skills are immediately visible and understood in a competitive job market. This strengthens the value of a UNO business degree and reinforces the college’s role as a key talent pipeline for Nebraska’s economy.”
❓FAQs:
- What about current BSBA students? Current students enrolled in a BSBA concentration may choose to switch to the corresponding newly approved major, including students graduating in December. Students interested in making the change should contact their academic advisor to discuss their options and next steps.
- Will this delay graduation for current students? No, the change will not affect the timeline of current students who are concentrating and switch to the corresponding newly approved major.
- Does this change CBA program structures? For most students, this is primarily a change in how their degree is designated—from a BSBA with a concentration to a bachelor's degree with a major in their chosen field. The transition does not require significant changes to CBA program structures. However, students should meet with their academic advisor to review their individual degree plan and ensure they are enrolled in the appropriate major.
