Karen Watterson, administrative associate for the Office of Business and Finance at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO), has been named UNO's Employee of the Month for July 2026. She was praised for her expertise, collaborative spirit, and commitment to supporting colleagues.

One nominator said: "Karen joined UNO in January 2022 and quickly became the subject matter expert for the Office of Business and Finance. She came from a corporate environment to higher ed, which can be a bumpy transition, but she took all of the changes and processes in stride. Her communication is lighthearted but professional. She is consistent with her messaging and approaches tasks with a positive attitude."

Her expertise is matched by her willingness to share her knowledge and support the success of others.

Another nominator added: "Although Karen is not my supervisor, she has been an invaluable mentor as I have transitioned into my new role. No matter how many times I interrupt her, she has generously shared her time and knowledge, helped me understand organizational nuances and processes, and provided reliable guidance on how to effectively navigate challenges and work within the organization. Her willingness to invest time in helping me succeed has made a significant difference in my ability to learn and grow in my position."

Nominators also recognized Watterson's responsiveness and willingness to support colleagues across the university.

Another nominator said: "I often reach out to Karen with specific questions regarding her department—sometimes it is cost center and reconciliation questions and sometimes it's just general questions about someone's calendar or a university policy. Karen has a deep knowledge and understanding of the university, and no matter what I ask, she responds quickly with as much information and help as she can possibly provide. She is always so kind, and her helpful attitude and cheerful spirit are a joy to me."

For being named Employee of the Month, Watterson received a certificate, a hot/cold tumbler provided by The Maverick Store, a monetary award, two tickets to a UNO sporting event, and use of a designated parking space.
