University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) Chancellor Joanne Li, Ph.D., CFA, delivered her 2025 State of the University Address on Oct. 17, calling on the campus and community to help accelerate UNO’s impact on students, the workforce, and the state.

➡️ What’s new: This year’s theme, Powered by Purpose, highlighted UNO’s evolving role as an engine of economic mobility, workforce development, and innovation. With nearly 15,000 students enrolled and rising first-gen numbers, Chancellor Li detailed how UNO is building a university model that’s agile, student-focused, and workforce-aligned.

💡 Why it matters: From AI-driven programs to national athletic recognition and record-breaking philanthropy, the university is proving its value far beyond the classroom.

🔎 Zoom in: Chancellor Li highlighted successes from the last year, including:

Academic Innovation:
  • Launched Nebraska’s first Bachelor of Science in Artificial Intelligence
  • Introduced Gen Ed reform focused on relevance and flexibility
  • Expanded micro-credentials and co-op learning programs
Workforce Leadership:
  • 81% of graduates remain in Nebraska one year after earning their degree
  • Deep employer partnerships guide curriculum development
Community Impact:
  • Best Public University for Veterans (Military Times)
  • $59M raised in private philanthropy in FY25
  • Named co-host of the NCAA Men’s College World Series

🎤 What was said: Joanne Li, Chancellor, University of Nebraska at Omaha: “Every gear, every person, every program—working together toward a common direction. That is what happens when a university aligns its mission, people, and priorities. That’s what it means to be powered by purpose”.

🌎 The big picture:

  • This year’s address aligned with UNO’s Strategic Framework: a commitment to educating all learners, leading pragmatic research, and ensuring workforce and economic development across Nebraska.
  • From innovative curriculum design to deep-rooted community engagement, every initiative strengthens UNO’s position as Nebraska’s premier metropolitan university.

⚡ What’s next: Chancellor Li called on every member of the UNO community to act: recruit students, tell UNO’s story, and serve as ambassadors for a university on the rise. As Li put it, “When Mavericks thrive, Nebraska thrives”.
