The University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) flag will be lowered on Tuesday, Oct. 25, in memory of UNO retiree Robert (Bob) Mortenson, who passed away on Oct. 5, 2022, at the age of 86.
Bob joined UNO in 1988 and served as associate dean of the College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences (formerly College of Education) until his retirement in 2000. Following his retirement, Bob continued to work part time within the college until 2003.
No stranger to the University of Nebraska system, Bob was the director of the Department of Conferences and Institutes at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln from 1981 until joining UNO in 1988.
Originally born in Massachusetts, Bob lived in multiple Iowa cities before moving to Columbia, Missouri, where he earned his doctorate. He was a resident life coordinator at the University of Indiana from 1970 through 1975 before he moved to Omaha where he served as executive secretary of the Mid-Plains Teacher Corps Network for five years before heading to Florida where he was chairperson of the University of North Jacksonville's Department of Curriculum and Instruction until returning to Nebraska in 1981.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lorraine; sons Tim and Steve; daughter Lori; brother, David; and sisters-in-law Alice and Caroleanne.
He is survived by two daughters-in-law, Pam and Robin; son-in-law Gregory; five grandchildren, Matt, Mike, Grace, Megan, and Katie; one great-grandchild, Noah; and his brother, Richard.
A service was held for Bob on Oct. 10, 2022.
The thoughts and condolences of the university community are with Bob's loved ones during this time.
