Courtesy of TEDxOmaha – After a talk in Omaha, UNO Assistant Professor Sofia Jawed-Wessel is getting attention on the global stage.

Jawed-Wessel spoke at TEDxOmaha in Oct. 2016. Her talk, “Women’s sexual pleasure: What are we so afraid of?” was recently selected by TED to be promoted to its main website, TED.com, alongside speakers like Bill Gates, Elizabeth Gilbert, and Sir Ken Robinson. Since the TEDx program began in 2009, fewer than 400 TEDx talks have been promoted to the TED.com website. For comparison, there are over 84,000 videos on the TEDx YouTube channel.

Jawed-Wessel’s talk will be the featured video on TED.com at 10 a.m. CST on Friday, Jan. 6. The talk has received over 39,000 views on the TEDx YouTube channel since it was posted on Nov. 2, 2016.

“Working with the TEDxOmaha team was already such an honor. Now through a global platform, I have the opportunity to shape the way we think and talk about women’s sexuality and its relationship to gender equity,” said Jawed-Wessel.

Jawed-Wessel teaches and generates new knowledge in the area of public health through scientific studies. Her research focuses on understanding and improving the sexual health of women and couples as they transition into parenthood by documenting sexual behaviors, sexual function, relationship adjustment, and overall sexual changes during pregnancy and after childbirth. Jawed-Wessel has provided expert testimony for the Nebraska Unicameral, the Nebraska School Board of Education, and the Omaha Public School Board of Education. She has successfully argued in favor of comprehensive sex education in Omaha Public Schools and she is active in advocating on public policy issues in her field.

Jawed-Wessel is an Assistant Professor in UNO's School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation, and she is the Associate Director of the Midlands Sexual Health Research Collaborative.

Looking for more engaging talks? TEDxUNO 2017 will be held on Feb. 18, 2017 at Strauss Performing Arts Center on the UNO campus. Meet the speakers and get ticket information.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TED Talks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for
the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)
