  • Responsibilities & Expectations

You and your advisors work together to achieve your goals. As a team, each of you has a role with different expectations and responsibilities that must be met in order for you to be successful and reach your academic goals.

Academic Advisor's Role

  • Be knowledgeable about and effectively communicate the curriculum and graduation requirements
  • Understand both UNO’s university and individual colleges’ policies and procedures
  • Guide students to develop realistic goals and encourage them to reach them
  • Help students explore academic programs, choose a major, and a career
  • Refer students to available campus resources
  • Accurately document students’ progress toward completion of general education requirements
  • Be accessible to students in person, over the phone, or via e-mail
  • Work with students to help increase problem solving and decision making skills
  • Maintain confidentiality and adhere to FERPA guidelines

Student's Role

  • Check UNO email regularly—all university and advisor communications are sent to your Microsoft for Students
  • Make regular contact with the advisor each semester
  • Ask questions! (And write down the answers-it really helps!)
  • Organize official UNO documents, advising sheets from advisor meetings, fliers, and handouts so both you and your advisor can easily access the information
  • Accept responsibility for your decisions
  • Communicate your interests, abilities, and goals to your advisor
  • Become knowledgeable about UNO college programs, policies, and procedures. (i.e. dropping classes, enrollment, probation/suspension, student accounts/financial aid, student code of conduct, etc.)
