OMAHA – Three student veterans from the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) have earned positions in a prestigious national security fellowship designed to bring veterans into foreign policy creation.
UNO students Kevin Sefcovic, Harrison Johnson and recent graduate Megan Carr join an elite class of 32 student veterans from across the United States—more than 50 percent of whom are from underrepresented demographics—in the Veterans4Diplomacy Fellowship program, which is designed to prepare them to outcompete their civilian peers in obtaining positions in national security policy.
Veterans4Diplomacy pairs veterans from across the country with mentors who have achieved significant roles in foreign policy, in order to prepare student veterans to lead. New fellows then attend a three-day orientation with prominent speakers, work with their mentor to apply for elite scholarships, and attend events throughout the year to improve their foreign policy knowledge and build their network.
Carr, Johnson and Sefcovic earned admission to the program alongside seven students from Ivy League schools in the 2016 cohort.
“I’ve always wanted to continue my service after leaving the Navy but didn’t know how,” Sefcovic said. “Joining this program has been an honor and will help me do that through foreign policy.”
“Veterans4Diplomacy has made me realize how many ways I can serve and ensure our nation’s security. They also have equipped me with the resources and knowledge to take that path,” Johnson said. “I’m proud to help represent Omaha in the program.”
Veterans4Diplomacy Executive Director and Founder Jayson Browder echoed those sentiments.
“The value of having veterans in foreign policy creation cannot be overstated. These are people who have ‘been there’ and understand the realities of our policy. We’re honored to help them get into roles to make a difference.”
