UNO’s Academic Advising Council elected three new officers in June:
- Sammi Kaiser, President: Sammi is the Assistant Director of Academic Advising at the Academic and Career Development Center. She advises undecided students, focusing on career development and academic success. Her professional interests include career/major exploration, advising efficiencies, and first-year experience programming.
- Huai-Mei Furman, Vice President: Huai-Mei is an academic advisor in the College of Education. She advises future elementary school teachers who have been accepted to the Educator Preparation program. Her professional interests include career advising, assessment of advising, and creating an inclusive space for all students to thrive.
- Katie Larson, Secretary: Katie is an academic advisor in the College of Education. She advises students in Pre-Education, Pre-Special Education, Library Science and Sign Language Interpreting. Her professional interests include improving the advising experience for transfer students and supporting academic success for freshmen.
The officers serve a two-year term on a council devoted to professional development of UNO’s academic advisors. Monthly forums keep advisors up-to-date on topics ranging from best practices in advising to technology and program updates. The group, which formally launched in 2011, welcomes not just advisors to its meetings, but also many other professionals on campus who support UNO students.
Outgoing officers are President Ashley Cunningham, Vice President Karen Bloemer, and Secretary Stephanie McGowan.
