The University of Nebraska Omaha (UNO) is committed to community engagement. We are pleased to have been recognized for our commitment by the Carnegie Foundation and the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll.

2019 Excellence in Community Partner Engagement Award

The partnership between UNO and the Omaha Public Schools (OPS) was awarded the 2019 Excellence in Community Partner Engagement Award. The P-16 Initiative aims to connect K-12 and University of Nebraska at Omaha students with nonprofit community partners through the development of collaborative academic service learning experiences.

Since 2010, the P-16 Initiative has engaged over 11,000 UNO students and over 19,000 K-12 students in 631 projects. Each year, students provide approximately 40,000 hours. In each project, UNO and K-12 students are able to apply classroom knowledge into real-world situations to better the community – resulting in better comprehension of academic concepts and an increased sense of civic engagement.

  • In 2014 UNO received the Presidential Award for the Economic Opportunity category. This is the highest level of recognition in the Honor Roll.
  • Since its inception in 2006, UNO has been included in the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll every year.
