Central to UNO’s mission and strategic plan is community engagement. 

2023-24 Campus Community Engagement

The following represents data for the 2023-24 fiscal year and/or summer 2023, fall 2023, and spring 2024 terms. Institutional community engagement numbers are coordinated through the Office of Engagement and in collaboration with many other UNO departments.


433 Community Partners

Nonprofit organizations, businesses, government agencies, and K-12 schools that partner with UNO. Partnerships benefit the community and university.

Showcasing Partnerships

The UNO Community Engagement Partnership Initiative (CEPI) is an online tool that collects and showcases community engagement projects and those community partners. The tool has a series of maps and reports with filters by focus area, organization type, legislative district, and more.

9,400 + UNO Students

Engaging with the community in and outside of the classroom.

  • 8,300 + in service learning and community-based learning courses.
  • 1,100 + in co-curricular service activities.

585 Engaged Courses

With a service learning or community-based learning component.

  • 251 service learning courses
  • 334 community-based learning courses

Service Learning Academy (SLA) Impact

47 schools as community partners that actively participate in P-16 Initiative service learning course development and success.

  • 14 Middle/Elementary Schools
  • 24 High Schools
  • 9 After School Programs

1,165 elementary, middle, and high school students engaged with UNO students in service learning courses.

$13,000 funds awarded to community nonprofits while students practice philanthropic giving in Maverick Philanthropy Initiative (MPI) service learning courses.


Barbara Weitz Community Engagement Center (CEC) Impact

38 community partners with office space in the CEC.

$1.8 + Million in estimated value of contributed space and IT services by organizations using meeting and event spaces in CEC.

5,200 + events and meetings in the CEC.

67,000 + attendees at meetings and events in the CEC.


Volunteer and Civic Engagement Programs (VCE) Impact

169 community partners co-creating with campus-wide volunteer programming, including signature service days and events.

  • 38 CEC Community building partners
  • 29 Community partners participating in campus-wide volunteer events and programming.
  • 102 Community partners with UNO student-athletes as volunteers

403 UNO students participated in civic and voter engagement programming, including voter registration events, dialogues, and constitution week.

1,096 UNO students participated in volunteering opportunities facilitated by VCE, Community Engaged Scholars Transcript Designation, Athletics, TRIO, and Goodrich Scholarship Program.


Engaged Scholars

38 UNO students who have graduated as engaged scholars through UNO's Community Engaged Scholars Transcript Designation (CESTD), since 2019.
