5 Reasons Omaha is a Food Lover's Dream

If you’re not from the City of Omaha, you likely wouldn’t expect it to have an impressive food scene. But it’s one of the many things Omahans hang their hats on. The culinary landscape in Omaha is vast and truly offers something for everyone, whether you’re passing through or becoming a Maverick (we prefer the latter!)

So, if you’re a foodie, here are five yummy reasons why Omaha and the University of Nebraska at Omaha might just be the perfect place for you.

1. Most Restaurants Per Capita?

Number one on our list is actually the basis for the rest of this article. In 2024, Omaha Magazine reported that the Douglas County Health Department (which handles restaurant licensing and permits) claimed that Omaha has more restaurants per capita than any other city in the U.S. based on size and population.

It’s a fact that has been repeated with satisfaction (and admittedly, some uncertainty) by Omahans for years; but as Omaha food critic Sarah Baker Hansen puts it, the accuracy of the statement actually doesn’t matter, and rather, it’s a point of pride.

Here’s the truth: Omaha is the proud home to thousands of restaurants. More restaurants than any person is capable of tasting in a lifetime. The phrase “there’s nowhere to eat” literally does not exist in Omaha. So, let’s dig in.

2. Steakhouses

Nebraska is dubbed the ‘Beef State’ for a reason! Cattle production is the top economic driver in the state thanks to Nebraska’s climate, natural resources, and access to quality feed. Did you know that for every one Nebraskan there are three cattle?

With such a high volume of sustainable and humane cattle production right in our backyard (literally!), Nebraska is home to some of the freshest, highest-quality beef in the world. That means delicious, locally-grown beef in grocery stores, meat markets, and of course, steakhouses.

One of the great things about Nebraska steakhouses is that there’s no wrong choice. Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion with a ribeye at the Committee Chophouse in Blackstone’s famous Kimpton Cottonwood Hotel or treating yourself to a filet at the state’s oldest steakhouse, Johnny’s Cafe in South Omaha, you’re sure to get a meal you will be dreaming about for years to come.

3. Cultural Diversity

Despite Omaha being smack-dab in the middle of America, there are food options from across the world. Sink your teeth into flavors from Vietnam at The Banh Mi Shop! In the mood for Indian food? Head to Kinaara in Regency, where Chef Ashish is bringing flavors of Biryani and South India to our plates.

If you’re craving authentic, time-honored, home-cooked Mexican food, head to Maria’s, a staple in Ralston. Wanting a fresh Greek salad or moussaka? The Greek Islands could be your next go-to. You can also expand your palate at the Okra African Grill, where Chef Sodji will introduce you to flavors from Togo and its historical influences.

If you’re missing home, it’s likely that Omaha has the flavors you crave. But if you’re simply looking to try something new, there are new favorites to unlock on every block! Which brings us to reason number four...

4. Location

Location, location, location. There are restaurants in every nook and cranny of the City of Omaha, and UNO is in the heart of it all. UNO’s Scott Campus has a plethora of food options within walking distance from housing and campus buildings, most notably at Aksarben’s Inner Rail Food Hall. And from Dodge campus, highly rated food options like Dan’s Thai Cuisine, Jams, Zio’s Pizza, and so many more are a quick scooter ride away.

Whether you’re downtown, out west, or in North or South Omaha, there are local eats just steps away that are worth drooling over.

5. National Recognition

If our humble opinions haven't convinced you, maybe the James Beard Awards judges will.

The James Beard Awards, which celebrate the nation’s best restaurants, chefs, and bakers, often honor Omaha-area eateries with highly sought-after nominations.

According to Omaha food pro Dan Hoppen, Omaha has received 29 James Beard nominations, 16 of which have come since 2017.

David Utterback of Benson’s Yoshitomo was named a ‘Best Chef’ finalist in 2023, 2025, and 2026, and The Boiler Room’s Tim Nicholson was a finalist in 2024.
