New Forensic Psychiatry Fellowship Aims to Fill Mental Health Gaps in Nebraska Corrections

A new collaboration between UNMC and Sarpy County launches a forensic psychiatry fellowship to serve incarcerated individuals and build a pipeline of experts across the state.

➡️ In this episode: Kimberly Clawson, M.D., fellowship director in the University of Nebraska Medical Center’s (UNMC) Department of Psychiatry, and Don Kelly, vice chair of the Sarpy County Board, join host Cathy Wyatt to explain the newly established forensic psychiatry fellowship. The program will treat inmates in the Sarpy County correctional center and develop a sustainable pipeline of mental health professionals trained to work in forensic settings. Guests discuss the structure, goals, and expected statewide impact of the initiative.

💡 Why it matters: Nebraska faces growing demand for mental health care within its correctional facilities. This fellowship addresses two urgent needs: integrating proper psychiatric care for inmates and expanding the workforce of specialists trained to serve in forensic psychiatry.
