Aliyah (Joseph) Sanders

Aliyah Sanders, Academic Advisor I, in the Maverick Advising Center, was recently named the “Advisor of the Month” by the Academic Advising Council (AAC) for the month of December.

The award was presented to Sanders at the December Academic Advising Council meeting.

Her nominators said, “Aliyah's personality radiates positivity and enthusiasm. She is the perfect choice to lead events like the MAC's annual Taco Tuesday. Her upbeat nature and love for interacting with people ensure that every occasion she leads becomes a joyous and welcoming experience. Aliyah's dedication to bringing fun and happiness to our students is truly commendable. We're grateful for all the wonderful moments she creates. Thank you, Aliyah!”

“Aliyah consistently brings a bubbly and professional energy to the Office. She has a special ability to create a fun and inclusive space for our students. Last semester she led the creation of "Taco Tuesday" to welcome students to the Maverick Advising Center and lead our office during the heat of Enrollment Days with new students. Recently she's been working hard to do an even larger scale "MAC'in on Taco Tuesday", as we bring together even more students and staff from campus to the Maverick Advising Center.”

“Aliyah has been nothing but a great help. I've really leaned on her during my training process as a new hire here in the Maverick Advising center. She is constantly my go-to when it comes to advice and has been a tremendous help. She has put in tremendous effort into our MAC'n Taco Tuesday event and really done a great job taking control of this project. She has been going above and beyond and has been awesome to work with.”

“Aliyah is a diligent, and comprehensive advisor. Her authentic personality makes it so easy to connect with her. She brings in her upbeat positive energy to her advising meetings and her students often leave her advising sessions with her giving them a high five, an encouraging word or a smile. Aliyah spearheaded MAC's Taco Tuesday and did a STELLAR JOB, we had many students show up and she brought so much liveliness to the students, staff, and faculty who attended!”

“Aliyah is such a bright and encouraging member to the Maverick Advising Center. She always brings a spirit to the office and to the students she serves. The way she is able to come up with new ideas on how things can be done differently is inspiring to us all. This past week she organized an exceptional Taco Tuesday event for all students, faculty, and staff to come together, enjoy food, and spread positivity to our community. Aliyah should receive the Advisor of the Month Award for going above and beyond to not only help our students academically succeed, but to also show our students that UNO cares about their journey at UNO and beyond.”

For being selected as the AAC Advisor of the Month, Sanders received a certificate and gift card.

Nominate an Academic Advisor for the "Advisor of the Month Award"

If you know one of your colleagues has gone above and beyond in their exceptional service to students, their colleagues and/or the university, nominate them for the Advisor of the Month Award! Each month, one advisor will be selected at random from the nominations to receive the award at the Academic Advising Council meeting. All nominees will be recognized by AAC for their work.

Nominees must be at least .5 FTE whose primary role is academic advising. Once selected, advisors would not be eligible to receive the award again for one calendar year, although they can still be nominated in recognition of their work.

To nominate an academic advisor, complete the nomination form on the AAC website.

About the Academic Advising Council (AAC)

Monthly forums keep advisors up to date on topics ranging from best practices in advising to technology and program updates. The group, which formally launched in 2011, welcomes not just advisors to its meetings, but also many other professionals on campus who support UNO students.

The Academic Advising Council meets the third Thursday of each month at 1:30 P.M.
