Applying for travel aid

Coffee mug

IF THESE INSTRUCTIONS LOOK FAMILIAR, IT'S BECAUSE THEY ARE IMPORTANT!

If you are employed at any University campus, it becomes more complicated. Contact the Psychology travel assistant BEFORE YOU MAKE ANY PLANS!

What to do and when to do it. . .

After you've been accepted to present at a conference. . .

  1. Tell the Psychology travel assistant when and where you plan to travel.
  2. Tell the Psychology travel assistant if you are currently employed on ANY University campus (UNO, UNMC, UNL, UNK).
  3. If you have an email other than your University email that you check more frequently, give the email address to the Psychology travel assistant.
  4. If somone other than UNO College of Arts and Sciences or UNO Graduate Studies office is giving you funding, tell the Psychology travel assistant. Examples include:
    • UNMC/MMI funding;
    • UNO Office of Research and Creative Activity funding;
    • Any faculty from any campus offering to help you pay for travel from their own sources.
      • In this case, give the faculty name to the Psychology travel assistant
  5. Submit applications for funding (click the three previous words to get to the application page). Include the below with your application:
    • Acceptance email from the conference organizers.
    • Abstract of your presentation.
  6. Make travel arrangements, pay your conference registration, book your lodging, etc.
  7. READ YOUR EMAILS!!!!!!!

Apply for the Money

IMPORTANT! There are lots of questions about prices on the applications, but you just need to put in your best guesstimate. Close enough is good enough.

The College of Arts and Sciences Dean’s Office, the Office of Graduate Studies and Research, and the Office of Research and Creative Activity (ORCA) may have funds available to help you pay for your conference travel. You must apply to be considered; and can only be funded once per academic year. You will be notified by email if you are approved for funding, so make sure you check your emails regularly.

If you receive funding, a MANDATORY post-trip summary is required within 30 days after conference ending. If you don't turn in a summary, you get no money.

Read more about the summary

NOTE: Even if you are approved for funding, sometimes it takes several weeks before you receive notification. So plan on spending as if you don't have any monetary help from UNO.

FYI about the funding applications before you begin:

  • The CAS Dean's office has strict guidelines about the content of the application. Look at the examples carefully!
  • You are REQUIRED to submit a 1-2 page summary of your conference experience withing 30 days after the end of the conference. Only include what you learned at the conference on your summary; no "fluff" (Dean's staff word, not ours).
  • The CAS Dean's instructions do not indicate that an abstract is required; include one anyway.
  • The CAS Dean's instructions do not indicate that you need to include an presentation acceptance email from the conference organizers; you do need that.

BEFORE YOU BEGIN, VIEW THESE EXAMPLES!

CAS Dean's Instructions

Example acceptable completed application

Example acceptable summary

  1. You must first download the College of Arts and Sciences application form. It doesn't autofill properly if you enter the information online. FILL OUT ALL COSTS ON THE ARTS AND SCIENCES APP! They are anal about this and will send it back if you don't!
  2. Include an abstract of your presentation on page 2 of the application.
  3. Email the completed application to mmcdonald@unomaha.edu (or drop off at 347 ASH). Include the confirmation of acceptance to present at your conference; this is usually an email from the conference organizers.
  4. Keep a copy of the completed application for yourself. Or don't. It's up to you. Just thought it would be a good idea.
  5. Not sure if you'll get notified by the Dean's office of funding, but they tell us, so we'll let you know.

Office of Research and Creative Activity (ORCA) Funding

ORCA does NOT inform the Psychology travel assistant if you are funded. VERY IMPORTANT information for the travel assistant will be emailed to you and only you. The email will look like this - forward that email to the Psychology travel assistant.

If you are awarded an ORCA grant, you are required to participate in the Research and Creative Activity Fair held annually on campus.

The ORCA application is more complicated than the other applications mentioned above.

  • View required guidelines and a sample of a submitted ORCA application (click the links) for reference.

    • Follow the prompts from the application system to complete the application.
  3. Watch for funding notifications via email.
    • If awarded, return to your original application, choose "Add Contract" (found below the tab that is labeled "application ######), and follow the instructions.
    • Watch for an email informing you of a cost center number associated with your award; keep that information - we need it to get you reimbursed.
