A group of students in matching black "UNO Omaha" T-shirts pose on the steps of a red brick building with large white columns. The students smile, standing in multiple rows.

Summer Scholars and Summer Bridge students stand on the step of the Arts & Sciences Hall.

🎯 Project Focus: UNO Jumpstart is designed to bridge the gap between high school and college by extending the successful Summer Scholars Program. This initiative provides targeted support, mentorship, and academic experiences for Omaha-area students throughout their senior year and the summer before college. By fostering a sense of belonging and academic preparedness, UNO Jumpstart aims to increase student retention, reduce barriers to college success, and ensure a smooth transition into higher education.

💡 Why It Matters

  • First-year success is critical for college retention: Students who engage in early academic and social integration are more likely to persist and graduate.
  • Many students need additional support navigating college: Barriers like financial aid, course selection, and campus engagement can hinder success for incoming students.
  • Students benefit from structured transition programs: UNO Jumpstart provides mentorship, enrichment activities, and academic preparation to help students thrive.

🚀 Key Initiatives

  • Monthly Enrichment Activities
    • Extends Summer Scholars engagement throughout high school senior year.
    • Covers college admissions, financial aid, career development, and leadership training.
  • Summer Bridge Program
    • Invites approximately 40 students for an immersive summer experience before their first semester.
    • Includes enrollment in a 3-credit course, study groups, mentorship, and team-building activities.
  • Mentorship & Community Engagement
    • Pairs students with current UNO undergraduates for peer support.
    • Provides access to campus events, UNO Athletics, and community service opportunities.

📈 Impact Goals

  • Increase college enrollment and retention rates among Summer Scholars participants.
  • Improve first-year student success by providing structured academic and social support.
  • Strengthen UNO’s connection to Omaha-area high schools, expanding college access for all students.
  • Enhance long-term student outcomes, leading to higher graduation rates and career readiness.
