Medical Accommodations Related to Temporary Illness or Injury

Students experiencing temporary health-related or personal challenges may have access to academic and medical support options designed to help maintain progress toward their educational goals.

Available options may include temporary accommodations, medical supervision, and, when appropriate, medical withdrawal from courses. Some processes are coordinated through the Accessibility Services Center (ASC), while others are reviewed by university committees.

Medical Supervision

Medical supervision is available for students who miss class due to their own illness, injury, hospitalization, or other health-related condition. Depending on course policies and instructor discretion, medical supervision may support opportunities to make up missed coursework, exams, or attendance-related activities.

To request medical supervision, students must complete the application and submit documentation verifying the dates they were under medical care and unable to attend class. Medical supervision may be requested after an absence has occurred if documentation is available for the dates in question. Students should submit documentation directly to ASC and should not provide medical documentation to their instructors.
Request Medical Supervision

Medical supervision applies only when the student is the patient receiving medical care. In situations involving bereavement, caregiving responsibilities, law enforcement involvement, or other significant personal circumstances, students should contact the UNO Care Team. Absences related to weather, transportation, employment, or other non-health-related reasons are not eligible for medical supervision and should be addressed directly between the student and instructor.

Concussion Support

Students who experience a concussion may encounter temporary challenges. Because concussion symptoms can vary in severity and may change throughout the recovery process, ASC works with students to identify temporary accommodations that support continued access to coursework while promoting recovery. Temporary accommodations are individualized and based on the student's documented needs.

To request concussion support, students should complete the Concussion Support Request and submit medical documentation that includes the concussion diagnosis and date of injury. Students  contact ASC as soon as possible after an injury occurs to help minimize academic disruption and be connected with additional campus resources when needed.

Medical Course Withdrawal

A medical course withdrawal may be available when a significant physical or mental health condition prevents a student from successfully completing their coursework. This process is intended for situations in which health-related circumstances substantially interfere with academic participation and progress during the semester.

Students seeking a medical course withdrawal must submit an application and supporting documentation describing the nature and impact of their condition. Requests are reviewed by the Medical Withdrawals Committee (not ASC), which evaluates each situation individually and determines whether a medical withdrawal is appropriate based on the information provided.

Students who want to return to campus after an approved medical withdrawal should contact the Office of Civil Rights Compliance before enrolling. Additional steps may include providing documentation from an appropriate treating professional confirming readingess to return, meeting with university staff, and/or completing an evaluation.

Medical Housing Lease Cancellation

Students whose physical or mental health condition prevents them from remaining in university housing may be eligible to request a medical housing lease cancellation. This process is designed to support students experiencing significant health-related circumstances that affect their ability to live safely or successfully within the campus residential environment.

To request a medical housing lease cancellation, students must submit the required application and supporting documentation describing the medical need for release from their housing contract. Requests are reviewed on an individual basis, and students are encouraged to contact ASC as early as possible to discuss their situation and available options.
