Guide to Medical Accommodations and FAQs
Students experiencing a temporary illness, injury, pregnancy-related condition, or other short-term health concern may be eligible for accommodations or support services designed to help maintain access to academic programs and campus life.
The Accessibility Services Center (ASC) works with students to explore available options, coordinate accommodations when appropriate, and connect them with additional campus resources.
Because every situation is unique, students are encouraged to contact ASC to discuss their individual circumstances and support needs.

Understanding Temporary Illness and Injury Accommodations
Temporary illnesses, injuries, and medical conditions can affect a student's ability to participate fully in academic and campus life. The Accessibility Services Center (ASC) works with students experiencing short-term medical or mental health conditions to explore available accommodations, supportive measures, and campus resources.
Temporary illnesses and injuries are short-term medical or mental health conditions that may affect a student's ability to attend class, complete coursework, move around campus, or participate in university activities. Examples may include surgery recovery, concussions, broken bones, hospitalization, severe illness, pregnancy-related conditions, or temporary mental health concerns.
Some temporary conditions may qualify for temporary accommodations depending on the nature, severity, and expected duration of the condition. Students who are unsure whether their situation qualifies for support are encouraged to contact ASC to discuss their circumstances and available options.
Students should contact ASC as soon as possible when a medical condition begins affecting coursework or campus participation. Accommodations are not retroactive, so early communication is important. Students who experience an illness or injury during the semester are encouraged to reach out promptly to discuss available support and next steps.
Documentation and Accommodation Review
Accommodation decisions are based on an individualized review of a student's circumstances and any available supporting documentation. ASC works with students to determine appropriate support and adjust accommodations as needs change.
Documentation may be required to help ASC understand the impact of a condition and determine appropriate accommodations or support. Documentation generally includes information from a licensed healthcare provider describing the condition, expected duration, and functional limitations affecting academic participation.
In some situations, ASC may be able to discuss interim support options while documentation is being gathered. Students should contact ASC as soon as possible to discuss their circumstances.
Temporary accommodations are typically approved for a limited period based on the expected duration of the condition and supporting documentation. If a condition becomes ongoing or permanent, students may work with ASC to explore additional accommodation options. Students should also contact ASC if their condition improves, worsens, or changes significantly, as accommodation plans may be reviewed and adjusted as needed.
Yes. Temporary accommodations and support may be available to undergraduate, graduate, and professional students experiencing qualifying medical conditions.
Academic and Classroom Support
Temporary accommodations are designed to reduce barriers while students recover from an illness, injury, or other qualifying medical condition. Accommodations are individualized and may vary based on the student's needs and academic environment.
Accommodations may include flexibility with attendance, note-taking assistance, testing adjustments, accessible classroom access, alternate format materials, or other temporary academic modifications. Temporary accommodations may apply to in-person, hybrid, and online courses and may be approved for specific courses or environments depending on the nature of the condition.
Yes. Students experiencing significant medical absences, recovering from hospitalization, planning for surgery, or managing a concussion or similar condition are encouraged to contact ASC to discuss available accommodations and support. Temporary mental health conditions that significantly affect academic participation or daily functioning may also qualify for accommodations in some situations.
If accommodations are approved, ASC may communicate accommodation-related information to instructors while maintaining student privacy. Students are encouraged to communicate with instructors and may contact ASC for assistance if questions or concerns arise regarding approved accommodations.
Pregnancy and Recovery Support
UNO is committed to supporting students who are pregnant, recovering from childbirth, or experiencing pregnancy-related medical conditions. Depending on a student's circumstances, reasonable modifications, supportive measures, and other resources may be available to help maintain access to academic programs and university activities.
Yes. Students who are pregnant, recovering from childbirth, or experiencing pregnancy-related medical conditions may be eligible for reasonable modifications and supportive measures. Students are encouraged to contact ASC to discuss their needs and available support options.
Support may include flexibility related to medical appointments, temporary mobility limitations, recovery needs, lactation access, or other pregnancy-related conditions. Available support is determined on an individualized basis and may vary depending on a student's circumstances.
Yes. UNO provides designated lactation spaces across campus for students, faculty, staff, and visitors who need a private space for lactation-related needs.
Students with questions about pregnancy-related support, accommodations, or discrimination concerns may contact ASC or UNO's Title IX office for assistance and guidance.
Health and Wellness Resources
In addition to accommodation-related support, students experiencing temporary illnesses, injuries, or other health-related challenges may benefit from a variety of campus health, wellness, and support services. These resources can provide medical care, mental health support, and assistance with challenges that extend beyond the classroom.
The Nebraska Medicine UNO Health Center provides a variety of healthcare services for students, including preventive care, flu shots, illness and injury treatment, and other medical services.
Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) offers confidential counseling, crisis support, mental health resources, and referrals to help students manage personal, emotional, and psychological concerns.
Students experiencing broader challenges related to a medical condition, injury, or personal circumstance may be connected with additional campus resources and support services. ASC can help students identify appropriate resources and coordinate support when needed.
