What is Intersession?

An intersession is a one- or two-week class session that is offered before the beginning of the regular full session in the fall, spring, and summer terms. All courses offered in an intersession are either fully online or off-campus with a focus on experiential learning. These online or experiential classes (study abroad, internships, service learning, etc.) give additional options and flexibility to students’ schedules.

Intersession classes are available to continuing students, returning students and transfer students. Registration for an intersession is not allowed for first semester new freshmen. Coursework during an intersession is concentrated and intensive. It is recommended that students talk with their advisor before enrolling in an intersession course.

Intersession classes are part of the following semester for purposes of admission to the University, billing for tuition, class schedule listings, financial aid, registration, and graduation.

  • Fall Intersession is part of the following Fall semester
  • Winter Intersession is part of the following Spring semester
  • Summer Intersession is part of the following Summer Session

Session Information

All courses are either fully online or off-campus with a focus on experiential learning. Please consider the pace of the courses before enrolling in an intersession course as:

  • The Intersession course will be at an accelerated pace. Contact the course instructor for more information on what that means.
  • Attendance and participation will be critical to success as there are limited class meetings. Students need to have the time to commit to the entire session.
  • Financial Aid may be used for Intersession. Learn more about Intersession Financial Aid
  • Intersession courses will fill up quickly or may be canceled due to low enrollments, so students should enroll early.

Frequently Asked Questions

Am I required to take a class in the Intersession?

Intersession classes are not required for students.

How many credits can I take during the Intersession?

We encourage students to limit their enrollment to 3 credits during each session. Students are allowed to enroll for 18 credits during the standard Fall or Spring term.

If I take one class during Intersession, does it count towards semester enrollment for full-time status?

Intersession classes count toward full-time status in the regular semester following it.
  • Fall Intersession is part of the following Fall semester
  • January Intersession is part of the following Spring semester
  • Summer Intersession is part of the following Summer Session

Where can I view a list of Intersession classes being offered?

Go to the class schedule and in the Term field choose the regular semester the Intersession falls under and then choose "Intersession" for the session field.

How will I be billed for an Intersession class?

Because Intersession is part of the regular Fall, Spring or Summer term, there is no need for a separate billing schedule. The regular semester schedule for billing applies.

How will fees be charged for the Intersession?

Students will be assessed course-related student fees (fees assessed per credit, such as Distance Education, Technology, Research, and Library fees) in addition to laboratory/trip fees according to normal policy.

Flat fees such as UPF, Student Access, and Success, Cultural Enrichment, and MavCARD will be assessed only if the student is enrolled in regular term courses in addition to the Intersession.

Intersession credits will be included in the calculation to determine the level of UPF to assess for the Fall, Spring or Summer term if Intersession credits qualify for UPF and the student is also enrolled in regular term classes.

Will Financial Aid cover my Intersession costs?

A student’s enrollment in an Intersession is combined with their enrollment in the regular Fall, Spring, or Summer semesters. Students should compare the charges on their student account with the financial aid they have been offered, to determine if their financial aid will cover their Intersession costs.

Disbursements begin during the second week of the regular semester. This is the normal practice for Fall and Spring semester disbursements. Information about disbursements of financial aid for the Summer semester can be found at Summer Aid | Admissions | University of Nebraska Omaha. No financial aid disbursements are made earlier for students enrolled in Intersessions.

Since students can only take up to 3 credit hours, they would not reach half-time enrollment until they begin their other classes in the regular Fall or Spring semesters. The Pell Recalculation Date is the last day to withdraw from the regular Fall or Spring semesters and receive a 100% refund. Information about disbursements of financial aid for the Summer semester can be found at Summer Aid | Admissions | University of Nebraska Omaha. This means that if a student enrolls in an Intersession, but withdraws, the student would not be eligible for financial aid for that Intersession course.

When will I get my financial aid?

Disbursements begin during the second week of the regular semester. This is the normal practice for Fall and Spring semester disbursements. Information about disbursements of financial aid for the Summer semester can be found at Summer Aid | Admissions | University of Nebraska Omaha. No financial aid disbursements are made earlier for students enrolled in Intersessions that take place prior to the start of the Fall or Spring semesters and are included as part of those semester. Since students can only take up to 3 credit hours, they would not reach half-time enrollment until they begin their other classes in the regular Fall or Spring semesters.

When do I order textbooks for the Intersession classes?

Books in the bookstore will be stocked for the Intersession at the same time as all books are stocked for regular term classes in Fall, Spring and Summer.
