The University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) is partnering with the Hope Center for College, Community, and Justice at Temple University to administer the Student Needs Survey, which is the nation’s largest, most well-established assessment of students’ basic needs (food, housing, mental health, childcare, access to transportation and technology).

Data from the Hope Center survey in 2020 showed that nearly three in five students across the country experienced basic needs insecurity. Basic needs security is central to learning and is critical for student success, retention, and degree completion. Through the UNO student completion of this survey, UNO will have access to real-time data to assess students’ basic needs. The partnership with the Hope Center will provide access to the data, and support to analyze, plan, and take action to improve basic needs security and well-being for all UNO students.

If you have questions about UNO’s participation in the Student Needs Survey or want to be more involved, please contact Madeline St. Clair at madelinestclair@unomaha.edu.

For UNO Students

We need your input – what are your needs? Give us your honest thoughts on the Student Needs Survey; it will take no more than 20 minutes to complete. Everything you submit is anonymous and we will use the results to better serve you.

Throughout October and November, you will be sent a series of emails inviting you to complete the survey. All enrolled UNO undergraduate and graduate students who are at least 18-years-old are eligible to participate.

Please check your email for the survey link.

For UNO Faculty and Staff

You can help promote survey completion by:

  • If a student asks about the survey, encourage them to complete it.

  • If you are an instructor, you can make an announcement in your classes through Nov. 6 similar to: “UNO is doing the Student Needs Survey to understand your needs and improve campus services. Please check your emails for an invitation to participate.

  • If you are an instructor, you can post an announcement about the survey on the Canvas page for your courses similar to: "At UNO, we are doing the Student Needs Survey to learn from students. It’s quick and easy. Please check your emails for an invitation to participate!"

  • In student-facing offices, you can encourage students and student workers you interact with to take the survey while in your space.

  • If your department or office has a social media page, you can share the social media posts from the Maverick Food Pantry’s page specific to the survey.

What Happens After the Survey

Basic needs are critical to student success, retention, and social mobility. This data will help us create or improve programming to better serve students holistically and humanistically. After the survey, we will be implementing a Basic Needs Task Force that will have representation from students, faculty, staff, and community members. If you are interested in being a part of this Task Force, please connect with Madeline St. Clair to learn more.
