The First-Year Experience Seminars in the Colleges

BSAD 1100 – Business Mavericks Foundations

This course equips Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (BSBA) students with essential academic success strategies and introduces tools for exploring initial career interests. Students will engage in self-assessment and guided reflection to help align their academic path with long-term professional goals.


CFAM 1010 – Professional Seminar

Designed for students pursuing studies in Communication, Fine Arts, and Media, (CFAM). This course offers a foundational overview of academic and professional success in creative fields. Through critical thinking and career development frameworks, students will analyze key themes and perspectives that shape their academic, personal, and professional journeys.


CIST 1010 – College and Career Success

This course supports students in the College of Information Science and Technology (IS&T). Focused on identifying personal learning strengths and applying academic strategies for success in both in-person and online learning environments. Emphasis is placed on effective communication, problem solving, critical thinking, teamwork, and career planning. Students will also build skills in personal branding, professional networking, and the creation of a career portfolio, with a focus on the information technology field.


EXPL 1010 – College Exploration & Success

This course is designed to support Exploring (EXPL) students in navigating the transition to college and developing a foundation for long-term academic and personal success. Students will explore majors and career pathways through guided self-reflection and strengths-based assessments. The course introduces key university resources and academic success strategies, while fostering a sense of belonging through engagement with faculty, peer mentors, staff, and fellow students.


US 1020 – TLC Academic Success Seminar

This course enhances Buffett Scholars experience by sharing the potential for success among first-year students in the Thompson Learning Community (TLC). Students will learn and apply academic strategies, build meaningful connections with TLC peers and staff, and become familiar with a range of UNO programs and support services. The course emphasizes community, resource awareness, and personal growth.


EDUC 1010 – Foundations for Success in Higher Education

Designed for first-year students in the College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences (CEHHS), this course introduces the skills and mindsets needed for success throughout the college experience. Through active participation and discussion-based learning, students will develop foundational academic skills and explore the values, habits, and resources that contribute to thriving in higher education.
