We asked Nate, Fiona, Maria, and Meh about TRIO Project Achieve. Read what they had to say:

Meet Nate

Nate

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

Hello! My name is Nate Cohoon, and I’m a junior at UNO. I love spirituality, collecting things, and exploring all kinds of media such as film, art, and games.

Tell us about your major and how you became interested in it.

I’m currently pursuing a double major in Music Technology and Spanish. I’ve always wanted to be a producer, and I love learning about musical composition. I’m fascinated by everything that happens behind the scenes, on stage, and in the studio. I also have a huge passion for Latin music, and since I’ve been learning Spanish since elementary school, it made sense to add it as a major too. Plus, there are endless benefits to being bilingual!

What was it like for you to go from high school to college?

Going from high school to college was a bit scary at first, but I adjusted with time. The biggest difference has been the amount of freedom that I have now. It was important for me to learn how to use that to my benefit rather than my detriment.

How has Project Achieve helped you?

Project Achieve has made such a big difference in both my academic and personal life. I’m so grateful for all the staff and fellow students in the program. Not only has it helped me stay on track and pass my classes, but it has also given me a real sense of community and a place where I feel welcomed, supported, and safe.

Meet Fiona

Fiona

Tell a bit about yourself.

Hello, My name is Fiona Hti, and I am studying Graphic Design here at UNO. I am currently interning at a PR Branding & Marketing Agency where I get to work with an amazing team and bring my designs out to the public!

Tell us about your major and how you became interested in it.

Graphic design is everywhere, from your local flyers and packaging to magazines ,logos that are seen and recognized by everyone. I chose to major in graphic design because I strive to use my abilities to help others bring their creativity to life and share it with the world.

Tell us something fun about yourself.

I love spicy food. My spice tolerance has gotten to the point where I eat spicy noodles with a side of fresh peppers because the dish isn’t spicy enough for me. It’s not just noodles; any dish that’s meant to be spicy, I eat it with a side of peppers just to give it more kick and punch.

What do you like most about Project Achieve?

What I like most about Project Achieve is its provided accessibility and support. The advisors are always a quick email away and have helped me through my career here at UNO. They keep me up to date with new opportunities regarding my major, and I am always grateful for that. They also have a welcoming community where you’ll never be afraid to ask even the simplest questions.

Meet Maria

Maria

About me

My name is Maria Lopez-Lopez, and I was born and raised in Omaha, Nebraska, with roots in Guatemala. I’m currently a pre-nursing major, though I often find myself being indecisive and tend to overthink things, so I’m still figuring out whether nursing is truly the path I want to pursue. I’m also interested in physical therapy. I’ve always been passionate about a career in healthcare, especially when it comes to helping people recover, whether that’s in terms of mobility or overall care.

What I like to Do in My Free Time

In my free time, I love to eat and try new and different foods; I’m definitely a big foodie! I also enjoy being active by going to the gym or running. These are healthy ways for me to cope with stress and help me feel strong, both physically and mentally. I also value spending time with friends and family, and I enjoy reading when I get the chance.

Where I See Myself in 10 Years

Ten years from now, I hope to be working as a registered nurse or a physical therapist. I’m passionate about health and improving people’s quality of life, so I want to be in a role where I can make a difference. I also hope to have my own cozy apartment – and a cute dog, specifically a golden retriever!

How Project Achieve Has Impacted Me

Before becoming a part of Project Achieve, I felt anxious and uncertain about starting college. A close friend told me about the program, so I applied. With the help and support of the Project Achieve Advisors, I was able to branch out, meet new people, and join organizations like Students Against Hunger and the Association of Latino American Students. The various events and clubs have helped me improve my communication skills, learn new perspectives, and make great friends. I’m incredibly thankful! Project Achieve has helped me grow both academically and personally and continues to push me to be the best version of myself.

Meet Meh

Meh

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

Hello, my name is Meh Reh. I am the second youngest of ten children born to two refugee parents from Burma, and I was born in a refugee camp in Thailand. I moved to the United States at the young age of four and have been working toward building my own version of the American dream ever since. One of my biggest milestones was becoming the first in my family to attend college. After college, I hope to become a radiation therapist so I can help support patients during difficult times and play a part in their recovery.

What is your major? How did you become interested in it?

After exploring a few different paths, I decided to pursue a dual major in Biology and Psychology. I’ve always had a passion for healthcare, but growing up, it didn’t seem like a realistic career option for someone from my background. After coming to the U.S., I was introduced to the many different opportunities within healthcare and realized that I could truly make this dream a reality.

My interest in radiation therapy grew deeper when a family member was diagnosed with cancer and began treatment. Watching their journey opened my eyes to how impactful and compassionate radiation therapists can be. That experience inspired me to follow this path and be there for patients and families going through similar situations. I chose Biology to prepare myself academically for radiologic technology school and Psychology to better understand, connect with, and support the individuals I’ll work with in the future.

What do you like to do in your free time?

In my free time, I love staying active by going on walks or doing fun activities with friends. Spending time with loved ones always lifts my spirits, but I also value time alone to ease my anxiety and recharge. I enjoy being outdoors, running errands, cooking, and watching movies while I eat. Whenever I get the chance, I also love to travel and experience new places/cultures.

How has Project Achieve impacted you?

Since high school, I’ve always been part of TRIO programs, but college life was a whole new experience. Thankfully, Project Achieve has opened many doors for me and introduced me to countless opportunities—from networking to participating in major projects on and off campus. The close-knit community and supportive advisors have helped me grow both personally and academically. Because of Project Achieve, I’ve become more involved on campus, gained confidence in my goals, and built relationships that I will always cherish.
