Overview

The School of Communication offers Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degree programs with majors in Communication Studies (course prefix is CMST) and Journalism and Media Communication (course prefix is JMC). Students may double major within the School of Communication by completing the requirements for both majors.

The requirements for the major in Communication Studies includes a minimum of 57 credits, plus 15 credits in a second field of study for a Bachelor of Science in Communication and 16 hours in a foreign language for a Bachelor of Arts in Communication.

The major in journalism and media communication requires a minimum of 57 credits, plus 15 credits in a second field of study for a Bachelor of Science in Communication degree and 16 hours in a foreign language for a Bachelor of Arts in Communication degree. Journalism and media communication majors must select one of two concentrations - emerging media or public relations/advertising.

A total of 120 credits are required for bachelor's degrees, which includes general education requirements and general electives.

Communication Studies

  • Students will be able to explain the field of communication studies and its relevance to personal, professional and civic life.
  • Students will be able to apply communication theories and methods to analyze and evaluate communication phenomena.
  • Students will be able to effectively communicate the connections among communication, culture and difference.

Journalism and Media Communication

  • Students will be able to produce ethical media products through their practices, communication, self-presentation, and teamwork.

  • Students will be able to identify media tools to create and distribute compelling and engaging content.

  • Students will be able to interpret questions from varied perspectives and search for answers through research to communicate solutions.

General Education Requirements

All students enrolled in a degree program at the College of Communication, Fine Arts and Media must also satisfy UNO's general education requirements. Additional information on these requirements can be found on the University's General Education webpage. Please consult with an academic advisor for recommended choices for the major. Students may need to take additional courses as general electives to meet the university's 120 credit hours minimum requirement.

Available Minors

Communication Studies

Students may earn a minor in communication studies. To fulfill the minor, students must complete 18 hours in communication studies courses, including 12 hours of upper-level (3000- and 4000-level) courses. All CMST classes except the course used to fulfill the general education oral communication competency (CMST 1110 or CMST 2120) may count toward the minor in communication studies. All courses in the minor must be completed with a grade of “C” or higher.

Journalism and Media Communication

Students may earn a minor in Journalism and Media Communication with courses selected from JMC offerings. To fulfill the minor, students must complete 18 hours in JMC offerings with 9 of those credit hours in JMC 1500, JMC 2100, and JMC 2200 and 9 credits of chosen courses at the 3000 or 4000 level. Within the JMC major, students may not have a minor in another concentration besides the primary concentration they have selected for their major. For example, students following the emerging media concentration cannot minor in the PR/Ad concentration. All courses in the minor must be completed with a grade of “C” or higher.

Public Relations & Advertising

Students may earn a minor in Public Relations and Advertising (PR/Ad) with courses selected from JMC's PR/Ad Concentration offerings. To fulfill the minor, students must complete 18 hours with 12 of those credit hours in JMC 2100, JMC 2500, JMC 3230, and JMC 3620 and 6 credits at the 2000 or higher level of PR/Ad Concentration courses (with 3 of those credits at the 4000 level). All courses in the minor must be completed with a grade of “C” or higher.
