General Education

Education isn’t just about a degree. It’s about unlocking potential, shaping futures, and building leaders.

That’s the foundation of MavED, our bold new approach to general education.

As new courses and experiences are introduced, students will see a renewed focus on real-world learning, community engagement, and essential skills like critical thinking and communication.

General Education (MavEd) helps you:

The revised general education program at UNO (MavEd) is designed to provide students with a coherent, integrated, and meaningful educational experience that prepares them for personal, civic, and professional success. The primary goals are to:

  • Develop transferable skills—such as critical thinking, information and data literacy, integrative learning, and intercultural awareness—that are essential across disciplines and adaptable to a changing world.
  • Foster intellectual and practical abilities through engagement with diverse disciplinary methods, high-impact practices, and reflective learning experiences.
  • Deepen individual and social responsibility by enhancing students’ understanding of cultural diversity, civic engagement, and ethical reasoning.
  • Improve workforce readiness by aligning course outcomes with employer-valued skills and emphasizing real-world applications.
  • Increase student engagement, retention, and success through transparent learning outcomes, integrated course design, and expanded faculty support.

Together, these goals create a cohesive foundation that equips all UNO students to thrive in an increasingly complex and uncertain world.
