MavMentors
MavMentors are peer leaders who support student success across all six academic colleges at UNO, as well as in specialized programs and support areas including Exploratory Studies (EXPL), the Thompson Learning Community (TLC), Durango’s Advancement and Support Hub (DASH), and the Military-Connected Resource Center (MCRC).
All MavMentors are trained to promote a sense of belonging and to help new and returning students navigate the transition to college. They provide guidance on academic success strategies, mental health resources, and campus services. Through regular training, MavMentors stay informed about the latest UNO resources and opportunities so they can connect students to the support they need.
MavMentors also serve as role models and trusted points of contact for students who may need extra support. They encourage first-year (first-time and transfer) students to take ownership of their college experience, overcome challenges, and achieve their goals.
MavMentor Roles by Area:
-
College-Based Mentors, EXPL, and TLC
MavMentors in academic colleges, EXPL, and TLC attend and co-facilitate first-year experience seminars. They also meet one-on-one with students to help them set academic and personal goals and provide ongoing support to help reach them. -
DASH Mentors
In addition to working with first-year students, DASH Mentors support all UNO students by creating an inclusive, welcoming, and safe environment. They focus on helping peers from all backgrounds feel supported throughout their college journey and on the path to graduation. -
MCRC Mentors
MCRC Mentors receive specialized training to support military-connected students as they transition from military service to college life. They offer guidance and access to campus resources equivalent to what first-year students receive in FYE Seminar courses.
