UNO is proud to have hosted AmeriCorps VISTA members as part of our continued commitment to increasing the social mobility of at-promise students. Since 2023, AmeriCorps VISTAs at UNO have worked within the Barbara Weitz Community Engagement Center — a nationally recognized, one-of-a-kind facility that connects the campus to the Omaha community and beyond.
Over the years, UNO’s AmeriCorps VISTAs have supported projects that strengthen community partnerships, expand student engagement opportunities, and promote educational equity. Their work has focused on areas such as volunteerism, service learning, and basic needs support through initiatives like:
-
Student Well-Being and Financial Empowerment – Building sustainable resources and programs that strengthen student well-being, financial empowerment, and access to essential supports.
-
Experiential Learning and Workforce Development – Expanding experiential learning and career-readiness opportunities that help students build skills, social capital, and connections while strengthening pathways to long-term economic mobility.
-
Student Success and Workforce Development – Developing sustainable programs and resources that strengthen student success, career readiness, and workforce pathways.
-
Student Basic Needs Strategic Planning – Strengthening UNO’s basic needs infrastructure through strategic planning, resource coordination, and sustainable systems that reduce barriers to student success and economic mobility.
Current AmeriCorps VISTAs working in the UNO Office of Engagement have access to the free food and personal items through the Maverick Food Pantry
Although applications for AmeriCorps VISTA positions at UNO are not currently open, we are proud of the lasting impact these members have made on campus and in the Omaha community.
