AI is not only transforming the classroom but also revolutionizing research across diverse fields. At the University of Nebraska Omaha (UNO), researchers are leveraging generative AI tools to enhance data analysis, streamline workflows, and push the boundaries of discovery. Here, we spotlight three projects that showcase how AI is reshaping research practices and fostering innovation.

Using AI for Multiscale Modeling of Human Postural Dexterity

Project Lead: Madhur Mangalam

Understanding how humans maintain balance in challenging conditions has broad implications for rehabilitation and physical performance. Madhur Mangalam and his team are integrating AI tools to streamline data analysis and generate predictive models for balance impairments. These efforts include advanced statistical modeling, efficient management of large datasets, and simulations of postural control mechanisms. By enhancing their research workflows, the team aims to uncover new insights into biomechanics, contributing to both fundamental science and practical interventions in rehabilitation.

AI-Powered Game Art and Design

Project Lead: Lilly Lu

Generative AI is opening new horizons in game design. Lilly Lu’s project explores how AI can enhance workflows in areas such as 2D and 3D art generation, narrative development, and game mechanics. Working with advanced game design students, Lu is documenting the strengths and limitations of AI tools while fostering creativity and innovation. The findings will inform future AI-driven game design courses, preparing students for the competitive gaming industry and highlighting AI’s transformative potential in creative fields.

Enhancing Multimedia Production with AI

Project Lead: Chad S. Owsley

Media production students are learning to embrace AI tools to optimize workflows and boost creativity. Chad S. Owsley’s project integrates ChatGPT and other generative AI technologies into courses like Media Production Principles and Media Content Creation. Students use generative AI technology to streamline pre-production tasks such as storyboarding and news package creation. By fostering responsible interactions with AI, these projects equip students with skills to thrive in a modern media landscape, ensuring they graduate ready to succeed in dynamic and tech-driven industries.

“Working with students to interact with Large Language Models has been as much an educational journey for me as it has been for them. Seeing the creative ways in which students are engaging with these models has been inspiring, and it's opened exciting new pathways for me to deepen AI integration in future curriculum design.” - Chad S. Owsley, talking about his students’ performance in Media Production Principles and Media Content Creation.

AI: A Catalyst for Research Innovation

From biomechanics and game design to media production, AI is driving innovation and reshaping research practices at UNO. These projects exemplify how researchers and students are leveraging generative AI to uncover new insights, enhance productivity, and develop creative solutions. Stay tuned for more inspiring examples of AI’s impact at UNO in our upcoming blogs!
