Artificial intelligence is opening new doors for research in the humanities, helping scholars analyze complex datasets, uncover historical insights, and foster deeper understanding. At the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO), several projects are leveraging AI to enhance research in fields like history, human rights, and public scholarship. Here are two initiatives demonstrating AI’s transformative potential in the humanities.
Digital Human Rights and AI
Project Lead: Laura Alexander
In the Religion and Human Rights course, Laura Alexander is guiding students through the ethical implications of AI in the context of digital human rights. By using AI for brainstorming and editing assignments, students critically evaluate the limitations and biases of generative AI while exploring its potential to shape conversations about human rights. This project fosters critical thinking and ethical awareness in the digital age.
History Writing with ChatGPT
Project Lead: Martina Saltamacchia
Graduate students in HIST 9100 are using ChatGPT to support their research and writing processes. From brainstorming topics and refining research questions to annotating bibliographies and drafting papers, the AI tool provides interactive support that enhances creativity and productivity. This initiative empowers students to tackle complex historical topics with greater efficiency and depth.
Revolutionizing Humanities Research
These projects highlight how AI can enrich the humanities by providing tools to analyze, interpret, and communicate complex ideas. UNO’s commitment to integrating AI into research ensures that faculty and students alike can push the boundaries of knowledge while fostering ethical engagement with technology. Stay tuned for more updates on AI’s impact across disciplines at UNO!
