Welcome to UNO’s Digital Accessibility Challenge: Every Student, Every Course!

Welcome to the Digital Accessibility Challenge: Every Student, Every Course. We are glad you’re here. This challenge is designed to be flexible, practical, and supportive as you make your Canvas course(s) more accessible.

How the Challenge Works

The challenge is self-paced. You decide when and how quickly you move through the materials. However, our goal is to have all courses accessible by January 2026, so pace yourself accordingly.

  • Each page in this program focuses on a specific accessibility area (such as headings, links, images, or color).
  • As you move through each page, you’ll learn why the area matters, see examples, and find practical tips. Then, you’ll apply what you’ve learned by fixing your own course content.
  • Progress happens step by step. You don’t need to remediate everything at once. Small changes add up.

Support Along the Way

You are not doing this alone. The Digital Accessibility Office is always available to answer questions or walk you through fixes. Book a time to meet with us!

  • You’ll receive bi-weekly check-in emails with a short form where you can update your progress. This helps us celebrate your wins and provide extra support if you need it.
  • Additional resources and tools are linked throughout the program so you can go deeper when you’re ready

Your Role

Work through the pages in order, or start with the area that feels most manageable.

  • Apply the changes to your course as you go.
  • Use YuJa Panorama to guide and confirm your improvements.
  • Keep an eye on your email for check-ins and opportunities to ask for help.

A Note About Documents

This challenge focuses only on improving accessibility within Canvas — things like headings, links, images, and media. We are not asking you to remediate documents (Word, PowerPoint, PDFs) during this stage. Once you complete the steps in this challenge, we’ll follow up with guidance and support to help you make your documents accessible.

Next Step

Below, you’ll find an overview of YuJa Panorama, our accessibility tool on Canvas. Before you jump into the challenge, get to know Panorama.

When you're ready, select the first topic and begin making your course more accessible. Each step you take moves UNO closer to full compliance and, more importantly, ensures that every student has equal access to learning.

What is YuJa Panorama?

YuJa Panorama is UNO’s accessibility tool for Canvas courses. It is the main tool we’ll use to improve the accessibility of Canvas courses. It scans course content, identifies issues, and provides clear guidance on how to fix them. The tool connects directly to the areas we are working on in this challenge: headings, links, lists, tables, color, images, and video/audio.

As a first step in this challenge, we recommend that you get familiar with YuJa Panorama, as it will be an essential tool in ensuring your pages and assignments are accessible. Review the information below to get started.

Panorama in Pages and Assignments

When you go to edit a page or assignment, you may have noticed the “temperature gauge” in the bottom right corner of the rich content editor.

Temperature gauge icon in Canvas accessibility tool menu.

The Accessibility gauge will show up as green, yellow, or red depending on the accessibility score of the material in the rich content editor. Similar to a gas gauge, the location of the dial will depend on the score.

Three gauge icons representing accessibility scores: a red gauge for low score, an orange gauge for medium score, and a green gauge for high score.

The Panorama Accessibility Checker checks a variety of accessibility issues. Below is a full list of items that it identifies.

  • Non-Descriptive links
  • Color contrast issues
  • Missing Alternative text
  • Missing header & Incorrect heading structure
  • Missing table headers
  • Font size smaller than 9 points
  • YouTube video not having human-generated captions
  • Gif’s with increased risk of inducing seizures

When you select the gauge, the accessibility report will appear for you on the right side of your screen (see below). At the top of the accessibility report, you'll notice an:

  • overall accessibility score
  • the total number of issues there are
  • the number of issues in the minor, major, and severe categories

Canvas Accessibility Report showing a score of 91% with 1 minor issue, 3 major issues, 0 severe issues, and 4 total issues. The report lists Issue 1: table does not have a header, Issue 2: table does not have a caption, and Issue 3: element should be formatted as a list, each with 'How to Fix' and 'Fix Issue' buttons.

This is a great overview of the course and can help you quickly identify if there are changes that need to be made immediately.

Below the overview, you'll also see a review of the individual issues on the page. For each issue, it will explain what the issue is, give you directions on how to fix it, and give you the opportunity to fix the issue.

The how to fix option is a great way to learn the why and the how for fixing the issues, including what WCAG guidelines they align with. For actually fixing an issue, we recommend selecting "fix issue."

Panorama Dashboard

Your Panorama Dashboard can be accessed by selecting Panorama from your course navigation. Make sure Panorama is enabled! If you don’t see it on the left-side navigation in your course, go to Settings and then Navigation, find Panorama, select “enable” and then “save.” The Dashboard should look similar to the photo below:

Canvas Course Report dashboard showing an overall accessibility score of 98%, 70 total files processed, 0 files improved using Panorama, and 0 cumulative alternative formats downloaded. The report includes options to reprocess course, export report, and switch course, with filters for September 2024 to September 2025.

At the bottom of the course report, you have the ability to search through issues and view the accessibility report for each one. This can help you identify issues quickly, especially when you're already in the Panorama Dashboard.

"Canvas Files and Issues dashboard showing a list of course files with accessibility scores. Example files include PDFs and HTML documents such as 'why-write-by-terry-tempest-williams-1.pdf' scored at 63%, 'Read and Watch.html' at 86%, 'why-write-by-terry-tempest-williams-1(1).pdf' at 38%, and 'Module Summary for Flipped Classroom.html' at 94%. Columns display file type, file name, scanned date, score, and actions.

For the purposes of this program, we recommend using this "Files and Issues" area of your Dashboard to identity pages and assignments that need improvements in the core areas. Anything that is tagged with “HTML” indicates a page or assignment that contains accessibility issues. Select the "gas gauge” to pull up the accessibility report and walk through the fixes.

File entry showing 'Read and Watch.html,' scanned on Thursday, August 14, 2025, at 12:00 PM, with an accessibility score of 86%.
