For Commercial Pilot student Jacob Long, a chance opportunity in high school sparked a passion that would shape his future.
During his senior year of high school, Jacob enrolled in a class that included a few introductory flights. Although he had no previous interest in aviation, the course quickly changed his perspective. Learning about the physics of lift and experiencing his first flight inspired him to pursue aviation as a career.
Since beginning his journey, Jacob has earned his Private Pilot and Instrument ratings and is currently working toward his Commercial Pilot certificate. While his path has included challenges and setbacks, he has continued to grow as a pilot and looks forward to gaining more experience through cross-country flights, flying with friends, and experiencing more instrument conditions.
Beyond flight training, Jacob has embraced opportunities to become involved in the UNO Aviation community. He is a leader in Oaks International, a campus ministry where he has built meaningful friendships and connections. He is also a member of Women in Aviation International (WAI) and has participated in several aviation events, including the Lincoln Airport Tour, Jet Linx Luncheon, and Girls in Aviation Day.
This year, Jacob is also helping build a new aviation community on campus as the first Resident Assistant (RA) for UNO Aviation’s new aviation dorms. In this role, he is excited to create opportunities for students to connect, support one another, and build friendships centered around their shared passion for aviation. As the fall semester approaches, Jacob looks forward to helping residents—especially incoming freshmen—find their place within the aviation community.
Some of Jacob’s favorite aviation memories include passing his checkrides, taking friends and family on their first flights, and completing a night cross-country flight to Kansas City Downtown Airport. Seeing the city skyline near the airport was a memorable experience that reminded him why he enjoys flying.
Looking ahead, Jacob hopes to continue building flight experience after graduation by becoming a Certified Flight Instructor (CFI). While he is interested in eventually becoming an airline pilot, he is also open to exploring other aviation paths, including bush flying and missionary aviation.
Jacob’s ultimate goal is to pursue a career that allows him to continue flying while giving back to those who have supported him throughout his journey, especially his parents. He hopes to begin his professional career quickly after graduation and continue growing as both a pilot and a member of the aviation community.
With nearly 190 flight hours, a passion for aviation, and a commitment to supporting others, Jacob continues to make an impact both in the cockpit and across campus.
"Build connections, stay dedicated to studying, embrace challenges, and remember how special it is to pursue a career in aviation. The journey may not always be easy, but every lesson, setback, and accomplishment is part of becoming a better pilot."
