  4. Labs & Centers

Big Data Computing Lab

Faculty:
Dr. Parvathi Chundi

Scope of Research:
In this lab, we develop algorithms and systems to extract meaningful information from hundreds of giga bytes of unstructured data (text and image data sets) and structured data (CSV files) and index the extracted information (such as concept networks and ML models) in a way that can facilitate NLP querying by domain experts. We are currently developing a big data system for helping ophthalmologists understand the progression of age-related macular degeneration and other retinal diseases from retinal scans and another big data system to help material scientists and biologists to track biofilm phenotypes on 2D materials.

Location:
PKI 376

bricks Lab

Faculty:
Dr. Brian Ricks

Scope of Research:
Research in the bricks Lab are answering pressing questions in human safety and rehabilitation using novel techniques in virtual reality and crowd simulation. This work is generously funded by the National Science Foundation and is truly collaborative. Students in this lab work with researchers and professionals at other units in the college, at other departments at UNO, at UNL, at UNMC, at physical therapy hospitals, and at venues with large pedestrian traffic.

Location:
PKI 372

BRIDGE Lab: Bridging Research in Innovation, DesiGn, and Education

Faculty:
Dr. Andrea Wiggins, Dr. Christine Toh, Dr. Briana Morrison, Dr. Matt Germonprez, Dr. Brian Dorn

Scope of Research:
The BRIDGE Lab conducts translational Human-Centered Computing (HCC) research to inform and change practice in the form of actionable guidelines, policies, recommendations, new products, and processes. The BRIDGE Lab has several ongoing research projects in the areas of Computer Science Education, Open Communities and Open Source Software, Human-Computer Interaction, and Design Theory and Methodology.

Location:
PKI 367, PKI 373

CSLC: Computer Science Learning Center

Director:
Kyle Reestman

Services:
The Computer Science Learning Center (CSLC) offers peer-based assistance to several Computer Science core courses through peer tutoring and review sessions. The CSLC serves all UNO students taking these courses free of charge. Students seeking to work with a tutor only need to come to the center; no appointment is necessary for most of these core courses.

Location:
PKI 285E

Data Science Lab

Faculty:
Dr. Yong Shi, Dr. Zhengxin Chen

Scope of Research:
Study and research of data mining, database management systems and big data analysis.

Location:
PKI 372

LASER Lab: Laboratory for Advanced Software Engineering Research

Faculty:
Dr. Harvey Siy, Dr. Myoungkyu Song

Scope of Research:
We conduct research on the implementation activities of software engineering, focusing on modeling and analysis techniques for software and related artifacts, to enhance software developers’ ability to conduct testing and verification, as well as maintenance and evolution of complex software systems.

Location:
PKI 355

NLPKR Lab: Knowledge Representation and Natural Language Understanding

Faculty:
Dr. Yuliya Lierler

Scope of Research:
This lab researches natural language understanding, knowledge representation, automated reasoning, declarative problem solving. It is particularly interested in applying automated reasoning techniques for solving inference problems stemming from natural language understanding domain. The work spans theoretic foundations as well as practical implementations of methods for automated reasoning based on model generation.

Location:
PKI 376

R.N.A. Lab: Robotics, Networking and Artificial Intelligence

Faculty:
Dr. Pei-Chi Huang, Dr. Spyridon Mastorakis, Dr. Xin Zhong

Scope of Research:
The Robotics, Networking and Artificial Intelligence (R.N.A) will house the Center for Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, and Network Systems that encompasses the three areas of Cyber-Physical Systems, Computer Vision, and Networking. The vision of the team is to explore innovative computing, networking, and learning paradigms (e.g., edge and cloud computing, 5G, information-centric networking, meta learning, GAN, and deep learning). Specific goals of the lab include: (i) the development of robots capable of completing mission-critical tasks in unstructured environments without dependence on human guidance, and (ii) intelligent networked systems, enabling resilient and secure communication, (iii) machine vision with or beyond human-level performance.

Location:
PKI 369

WINDS Lab: Wireless Infrastructure for Network of Distributed Sensors

Faculty:
Dr. Jong-Hoon Youn

Scope of Research:
The WINDS Lab is a state-of-the-art wireless network laboratory applying advanced wireless sensor technology to various real-world problems. The long-term research goals of WINDS include the development of a comprehensive understanding of wearable sensor systems for medical applications and the investigation of a number of research problems in wireless sensor networks, which have inhibited complete utilization of wireless systems in medical applications.
