"Retiring to the Hilt"

After 38 years of dedicated service to UNO, Michael Hilt, dean of the College of Communication, Fine Arts and Media (CFAM) is retiring. The public is invited to a special reception on Wednesday, April 29

Hilt’s years at UNO showcase an incredible journey of leadership, scholarship, and service. He joined the university in 1988 as a professor in what is now the School of Communication. Over the decades, his leadership and commitment to student success guided him through a series of roles: Assistant Dean in 2007, Associate Dean in 2008, and Interim Dean in 2017, before being appointed permanent dean in July 2018.

“Dean Hilt has expanded opportunities for students, championed faculty innovation, and deepened community partnerships,” said Senior Vice Chancellor Phil He. “His time as dean reflects both exceptional leadership and a heartfelt dedication to the people and programs that make UNO such a vibrant academic community.”

As only the second dean since CFAM’s formation in 2006, Hilt has been influential in shaping the college’s identity and bringing together the School of the Arts, School of Communication, School of Music, and media outlets such as KVNO and UNO TV. Under his leadership, CFAM celebrated its 20th anniversary, marking two decades of creativity, collaboration, and community engagement.

Throughout his career, Hilt has been a believer in hands-on, career-ready learning. He has overseen CFAM’s expansion of internship requirements, experiential learning, and community partnerships designed to prepare students for an evolving media and arts landscape. He has also supported programs like the Summer Musical Theatre Academy, providing opportunities for middle-and high-school students to explore the performing arts and build connections with UNO faculty and students.

"When I first arrived on campus, I didn't think I would be here for 38 years. However, it didn't take long for Omaha and the UNO campus to feel like home," Hilt said. "I am very grateful for the opportunities I've been given. It's been a privilege to serve our students and work alongside exceptional administrators, faculty, and staff members.”

Hilt has also led the college toward significant philanthropic support. In 2023, the Richard Holland Endowed Scholarship Fund became the largest scholarship fund ever created to support CFAM students. This commitment to student access and success ensures that CFAM students have the financial and academic support they need to thrive.
