Psychology BS Cognate Requirements

  6. Psychology BS Cognate Requirements

Students pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Psychology must complete 15 credit hours from one of the five cognate sets below. No more than 6 hours of courses may be at the 1000 level, with the remaining 9 hours taken at the 2000 level or above. Six (6) hours of cognate coursework may double count with General Education requirements.

Students pursuing either Option 1 College of Arts and Sciences Requirements or Option 2 College of Arts and Sciences Requirements may take a second minor (for Option 1) or take a minor (for Option 2) in place of the cognate.

Approved cognate courses are populated directly to Degree Works. Students taking courses that they believe should fall under a cognate category - but are not listed under one of the above categories - should consult with their advisor.

What are cognate courses?

A cognate is a group of related courses providing broad support to the psychology major.

The courses in a cognate are related in a topical, thematic, interdisciplinary, sequential, or other such fashion, so that completion of a cognate provides coherent depth of knowledge in the area.
