Maverick Innovations assists faculty, students, and staff in many areas.

What is Maverick Innovations?

Maverick Innovations assists faculty, students, and staff with:

  • Identifying commercialization pathways
  • Protecting Intellectual Property
  • Understanding entrepreneurial opportunities
  • Identifying and providing entrepreneurial educational opportunities
  • Identifying resources for development and commercialization activities
  • Guiding entrepreneurial endeavors

Maverick Innovations does not directly fund entrepreneurial activities.


Real-World Experience

Traci Hancock is the Director of Maverick Innovations. She has worked with more than 300 technology startups from across the country through the National Science Foundation's Small Business Innovation Research Grant program and has worked to develop:

  • Team building
  • Strategy
  • Funding
  • General company development

Traci's expertise and network will greatly enhance both UNO and the greater Nebraska innovation community.

Resources for Entrepreneurs

  • Maverick Innovations recommends researching the Lean Startup Methodology. The Harvard Business Review has a great article explaining this methodology.

  • Maverick Innovations has partnered with the Scott Technology Center, to provide free co-working space in STC's Great Scott Lab for qualified UNO-affiliated start-ups.
  • Maverick Startups is a for-credit honors colloquium open to all students in the UNO Honors Program. Maverick Startups is designed to help students understand how to develop and validate successful business concepts.
  • The Startup Collaborative is a community partnership geared towards supporting startup founders and accelerating their ideas through 15 experiential modules that help validate your ideas and build successful businesses.
  • The Nebraska Department of Economic Development offers several support programs designed and developed to support innovation in our state. These programs include:

    • Ice House Entrepreneurship Program
    • Nebraska Innovation Fund Prototyping Grant
    • Nebraska Seed Investment Program
    • Nebraska SBIR/STTR Grant Development and Matching Grant Opportunities
