Purpose

  1. UNO
  2. General Education
  3. Purpose

Relevant. Coherent. Integrated

MavEd is designed to increase coherence, relevance, and meaning of general education at UNO. It connects us around shared goals, preparing graduates to thrive personally, civically, and professionally.

A Shared Foundation

The purpose of MavEd is to ensure every student, regardless of major, benefits from a shared educational foundation. This foundation develops transferable skills — such as critical thinking, data literacy, and communication — that serve students in any career path and in their civic and personal lives.

A Culture of Collaboration

MavEd also exists to align the efforts of faculty, advisors, and staff. General education is not a collection of isolated courses, but a program guided by a unified vision. Its purpose is to support educators and advisors with the tools, professional development, and partnerships needed to create a vibrant learning culture across campus.

Grounded in Relevance

At its core, MavEd connects education to the real world. Its purpose is to help students see how what they learn in general education courses applies to future jobs, civic responsibilities, and life’s enduring questions. In doing so, it addresses a common student concern: Why does this matter?

Commitment to Community

Finally, the purpose of MavEd extends beyond UNO. It reflects our mission as a metropolitan university: to prepare graduates who contribute to the vitality of Omaha and beyond. By cultivating adaptable, ethical, and engaged graduates, MavEd strengthens the communities we serve.

Be Part of the Purpose

MavEd is not just a curriculum — it’s a shared commitment. Students bring curiosity and ambition. Faculty bring expertise and creativity. Advisors and staff bring guidance and support. Community partners bring opportunities and real-world connections. Together, we make MavEd’s purpose come alive: an education that empowers graduates to think deeply, act responsibly, and shape a better future.
