Faculty Spotlight: Dr. Haoruo Fu

For Dr. Haoruo Fu, aviation is more than an industry—it is a field where education, research, and innovation come together to solve real-world challenges.

His interest in aviation first began after watching Top Gun, a film that has inspired countless people to explore the world of flight. As he learned more about the industry, however, he found himself drawn to a different side of aviation: the academic and research opportunities that help improve the field while preparing the next generation of professionals.

“My initial interest in aviation began with Top Gun,” Dr. Fu shared. “As I learned more about the field, I became especially interested in the academic and research side of aviation. It provides a meaningful way to address real-world problems while building connections among students, education, research, and industry.”

Dr. Fu's path into aviation academia was driven by his curiosity and desire to understand not only what happens in aviation, but why it happens. His passion for problem-solving and exploring the factors behind aviation challenges led him toward a career focused on both teaching and research.

One of the aspects of teaching he enjoys most is helping students develop critical-thinking skills. He believes learning should be an interactive process where students actively engage with course material rather than simply listening to lectures.

“I enjoy it when students ask thoughtful questions, challenge assumptions, and engage in discussion,” he said. “It shows that they are doing more than taking notes—they are thinking carefully about the rationale behind what they are learning.”

When it comes to advising students, Dr. Fu encourages them to trust the knowledge and experiences they have gained throughout their education.

“Your knowledge is one of the most powerful tools you have,” he explained. “When you encounter a problem or difficulty, look back at what you have learned rather than setting it aside. At the same time, when you face something new, do not be afraid to ask questions. Faculty are always happy to help students learn and grow.”

Among the many milestones in his career, earning his Ph.D. stands out as one of the most memorable. While it marked the completion of years of hard work, it also opened the door to new opportunities in teaching, research, and service within the aviation community.

Today, Dr. Fu is excited to be working alongside students on several research projects. He particularly enjoys helping students transform their ideas into conference presentations and potential publications, giving them the opportunity to contribute meaningful research to the aviation industry.

Outside the classroom, Dr. Fu has a fun secret: before becoming an aviation educator and researcher, he was a dedicated gamer. While he admits there may still be a few gaming highlights floating around online, he prefers to keep his gaming identity a mystery.

Through his commitment to teaching, research, and student mentorship, Dr. Fu continues to help students develop the skills and confidence needed to make an impact in the aviation industry.
