Mark Sheldon AAAE

University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) Aviation Institute instructor Mark Sheldon recently earned a professional certification from the American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE), expanding his knowledge of airport administration and bringing new expertise into the classroom.

Founded in 1928, AAAE is the largest professional organization for airport employees. For Sheldon, earning the certification strengthened his understanding of airport operations and the regulations that guide civilian airports while further preparing him to teach the Introduction to Airport Administration course.

“I wanted to learn more about the finer points of airport administration and improve my knowledge base for teaching the Introduction to Airport Administration class,” Sheldon said.

Sheldon began the certification process in May 2026 and completed it in August 2026. His preparation included studying four AAAE module books, creating flashcards and using the organization's study app to review daily practice questions. The final exam consisted of 180 questions, with three hours to complete the test and a 70% passing score.

One of Sheldon's biggest challenges was staying focused during the summer. To help, he created a 90-day study plan and set a specific date for his exam.

“I did my studying over the summer, and with that, there are so many distractions that come up,” Sheldon said. “Making sure I stayed focused on my goal date to take the final exam was my biggest challenge.”

The certification also reflects Sheldon's belief in the importance of professional development. He is a member of the University Aviation Association (UAA), where he serves on the Safety Committee, and encourages his students to become involved in professional organizations and pursue industry certifications.

“As an instructor, I talk with students and impress upon them how important it is to be part of professional organizations and earn any certifications they may offer,” Sheldon said.

Sheldon plans to bring what he learned through the certification into his courses, including Introduction to Airport Administration and Introduction to Aviation and Aerospace. He hopes to help students better understand the many careers and operations that make aviation possible.

“I want the students to see that aviation is more than just pilots,” Sheldon said. “Introducing them to all the areas that make aircraft operations possible gives them a peek at the other careers in aviation, and maybe introduces them to their next career.”

For students considering an AAAE certification, Sheldon recommends creating a study plan and sticking to it.

“Create a plan for studying and stick to it,” Sheldon said. “I chose a 90-day plan as it fit into my summer schedule.”

Through continued professional development, Sheldon is bringing new industry knowledge into the classroom and helping UNO Aviation students explore the many career paths available throughout the aviation industry.

I want the students to see that aviation is more than just pilots, Introducing them to all the areas that make aircraft operations possible gives them a peek at the other careers in aviation, and maybe introduces them to their next career.”
