Undergraduate Programs

The Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders (SECD) prepares future clinicians, practitioners, and educators to work with individuals with disabilities. Our programs are nationally-ranked and student-centered and will prepare you with the skills and experiences necessary for careers in dynamic, high-demand areas such as special education, sign language interpreting, and speech-language pathology.

We offer Bachelor of Science in Education degrees in these areas of study:

Communication Disorders
The Communication Disorders program is focused on the science behind and the treatment of communication challenges for individuals of all ages in educational and clinical/healthcare settings. This is a pre-professional program, preparing students for a graduate-level speech-language pathology or audiology program.

Early Childhood Inclusive
A collaboration with UNO's Teacher Education Dept., the Early Childhood Inclusive program is designed for students seeking to teach in Birth-3 or age 3 through third grade in elementary schools. Students will learn about early childhood education policy, social-cultural understanding, and the well-being of infants and toddlers.

Sign Language Interpreting
UNO offers the only program for sign language interpreting in the State of Nebraska. Students will graduate with a bachelor's degree and the skills to pursue national certification in interpreting.

Special Education, K-6, 7-12
The Special Education program is designed for candidates preparing to be special education teachers at the elementary or secondary level, serving children and youth with disabilities. The program is offered as a dual endorsement program with Elementary Education or a Secondary content area, or as a Special Education-only program.

Department and program highlights:

  • Participate in hands-on practicum and clinical experiences grounded in theory, research, and evidence-based practice.
  • Gain experience working with many different populations.
  • Develop essential interpersonal and problem-solving skills to work on collaborative, interdisciplinary teams in a variety of settings.
  • Recognize and integrate standards of professional ethics.
  • Learn from engaged, approachable faculty in small classes.
