The School of the Arts presents the Broadway Musical Masterclass.
Whether an aspiring performer, dedicated teacher or an unabashed musical theatre lover, the UNO Broadway Musical Masterclass Series Spring 2021 is for you!
The new series features seasoned pros of Broadway musical theatre giving one-on-one coaching to aspiring young performers from UNO, area high schools and the Omaha theatre community. This takes place in six Wednesday evening zoom sessions from 6:30 to 9:00 PM. Non-participants are welcome and will learn a great deal by just observing.
The Broadway Musical Masterclass Series is a new initiative in educational programming by the School of the Arts in support of UNO Theatre.

Jimmy Smagula

Jimmy Smagula is a gifted teacher of singing actors and a consummate performer on both the Broadway stage and American TV. Most recently he appeared on the National Tour of Les Miserables in the leading role of Thenardier. His many Broadway credits include the National tour of Phantom of the Opera, Chef Louis in the Little Mermaid, Rocky in Damn Yankees, and George in Billy Elliot. He made his Broadway debut in 2000 in The Full Monte. He has been a frequent guest on many popular TV shows such as Grey’s Anatomy, Parks and Recreation, Rizzoli and Isles, Hot Cleveland, Bones and The Sopranos.

Omaha native Q Smith is a leader of workshops and masterclasses around the United States.
She is a passionate educator who has been developing a curriculum entitled Rehabilitative and Restorative Art Conditioning for children with behavioral problems and learning disabilities. Most recently she worked with award winning musical theatre performers through the Nebraska High School Theatre Academy and Omaha Performing Arts. Her goals are to build a performing arts school integrated with the juvenile system, open a bed and breakfast in Hawaii, travel the world, continue her concert work and voice-over career, and publish her book Queens of the Theatre.
Doran Schmidt

Doran Schmidt is a dedicated teacher of musical theatre workshops, camps and masterclasses. She has been a favorite musical director for many of Omaha’s finest theatre companies including the Rose, Omaha Community Playhouse and Blue Barn. She is a teaching artist for Why Arts and served as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. She received her B.F.A. in Musical Theatre from Michigan State University and her M.A. in Theatre from UNO. Her artistry extends to a wide range of theatre arts including voice, movement, creative drama, dance and music.

Jake David Smith is an actor born and raised in Richmond, Virginia and he is thrilled to be originating the role of Prince Oliver off-Broadway as soon as live theatre begins again. He most recently made his Broadway debut in Disney’s Frozen. Jake’s favorite regional credits include: Prince Eric in The Little Mermaid, Lewis in Pippin (Musical Theatre Wichita) and Tony in West Side Story (New London Barn Playhouse). BFA in Music Theatre from Elon University.
