For Joshua Lingenfelter, classic literature was more than just a pastime—it was his north star. His passion deepened when he discovered UNO’s dual enrollment program, and over a decade later, that spark continues to grow.
Although dual enrollment wasn’t his initial goal, Lingenfelter always knew he wanted to teach AP Literature. “I was hoping to be able to teach AP Literature from the day that I was hired,” he shares. Over time, the course, along with Composition and IB English HL, became part of the dual enrollment program, which he continues to teach at Millard North High School. “I teach these classes because literature is the subject that I really love,” he says, adding, “At least I think that’s part of why I’m allowed to continue doing it.”
To prepare his students for the transition from classroom to lecture hall, Lingenfelter blends a deep appreciation for literature with essential academic skills. He prioritizes group discussions, reading stamina, and a variety of compositions. “Some of the works that I teach are works that I first read when I was in college,” he explains.
Above all, Lingenfelter’s approach is grounded in connection and enthusiasm, introducing students to profound literary pieces while fostering meaningful collaborative learning. “Being able to carry the torch for the people who appreciate these great works of art. All in all, it’s a very rewarding experience, and I feel very lucky that I get to do it.”
